My dog ate tin foil and is passing it in stool. Should I be worried?

That's not a very big piece of tin foil, and hopefully it should pass without problem, but there is always the chance it could get stuck. I would monitor her over the next 72 hours for signs of obstruction, which include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy, and constipation. Should you see any of those signs, I would take her into the vet right away.

If the piece of tinfoil was indeed very small then it will likely leave the body the natural way via the feces. There is a slight chance that it could cause an obstruction, so I would watch Bailey for diarrhea and vomiting and lethargy. If this happens, he will need to be taken to the vet for an x-ray. You can feed him a few spoon-fuls of sauerkraut, which will wrap around the foil and expedite it through the intestines. The sauerkraut may make the stool softer, as it is a natural laxative.

Yes if it was chewed well then hopefully it will pass out. I recommend feeding more food to help it pass quickly with the food. If he stops eating, becomes painful or is straining to poop without anything being passed then you should take him in for treatment, I expect he will recover without treatment. I have to agree that I think it will pass in time but one never knows with foreign bodies in each individual patient. I would monitor Jax very closely over the next 2-4 days for nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If these signs appear and persist I would advise seeing your vet immediately for possible x-rays. You may see no signs at all and that would be the best scenario for this case. One thing I would advise is feeding 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice daily with his regular food. Not pumpkin pie filling, just canned pumpkin. It's loaded with fiber and will keep the gut happy and things moving during the next few days, hopefully helping the staple along and out of the system. Good luck with Jax. Not sure if you will check the bowel movements but that staple might be really hard to find. I hope it passes soon and with no complications.

The biggest concerrn is that your dog may have not only chewed up but also swallowed pieces of the aluminum cans. Shards of aluminum cans can be quite sharp and can get stuck in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and intestines. Try to look inside your dog's mouth to see if there are any signs of cuts or pieces of can stuck in the mouth or throat. To help any pieces of aluminum pass through, you can give your dog something to bulk up the stools. Add 1 Tsp canned pumpkin per 10 lbs to its food, giving a bran muffin, or add 1 Tsp of Metamucil (for small dogs) or 2 Tsp of Metamucil (for large dogs) once or twice a day. Monitor your dog closely for the next 24-48 hours. If your dog starts to vomit, has diarrhea or doesn't not defecate, has a tender abdomen, or seems uncomfortable, then you will need to take your dog to your veterinarian.

If he only ate the one wrapper, I wouldn't worry too much. The foil isn't stiff enough or large enough to block or cause damage as it moves through. If it has been less than an hour since your pet ate it, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than an hour and it will have already moved into the intestines. Keep an eye on him for a few days to make sue he's okay and watch his feces for evidence that it has come out.

Often when there is foreign material in the GI tract motility will slow down so I would not be surprised that she has not passed more stool. The blood is likely due to irritation of the colon wall from the foil. I don't know what medication you are giving her so I am unsure what to tell you about how long it will take for her to produce any stool. If she is eating and drinking and acting normally I would not be overly concerned at this stage. Just keep in contact with your veterinarian as to how she is doing and if you and/or your veterinarian are concerned then take her back in for a follow-up exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
