My dog ate a dead fish with salt and vomited. Should I worry?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Murray! If he keeps vomiting he needs to be seen by a Vet for medications to stop the vomiting. With hold water for 6 hours and food for 24 hours. If there is no vomiting in the 6 hours offer shallow water only sips at a time. If he holds water down off a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice at the 24 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he refuses to eat, continues to vomit and is extremely lethargic he needs to be seen. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he just ate the fish, you should take him to your local vets and they will make him vomit. If he had the fish over 1-1.5hrs ago, making him vomit will not be beneficial. In that case, you need to monitor him at home for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stools, abdominal pain, twitching, being unsteady on legs. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should take him to your local vets right away.

The tuna itself isn't harmful, so I suspect he vomited mostly because it was an unfamiliar food for him that may have been too rich or salty. Keep an eye on him for any signs of increasing illness, diarrhea, more vomiting, lethargy, refusal to eat his evening meal, anything like that means he needs to be seen by your vet right away.

It would be a good idea to check some blood work on her, especially her sodium levels. X-rays will help to ensure that she vomited all of the large pieces of salt. Poor Blue! Too much salt water from the ocean can make a dog vomit, and the excess salt plus the vomiting will cause him to be dehydrated. Make sure he has access to plenty of fresh water, and I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, he develops seizures (too much salt water can cause this), becomes uncoordinated, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

It could be the fish has upset Voight's stomach. If he's otherwise acting normally now, I'd just monitor him. I'd seek medical attention if he starts vomiting again, has a loss of appetite, becomes lethargic, and/or his gums turn pale or white. I hope this helps!

Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent vomiting or diarrhea and abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
