My dog ate dead rotten fish and seems quiet and tired. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Murray! If he keeps vomiting he needs to be seen by a Vet for medications to stop the vomiting. With hold water for 6 hours and food for 24 hours. If there is no vomiting in the 6 hours offer shallow water only sips at a time. If he holds water down off a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice at the 24 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he refuses to eat, continues to vomit and is extremely lethargic he needs to be seen. Good luck!

Watch her closely for signs of gastrointestinal upset such as inappetence, vomiting and diarrhea and if observed, have her evaluated then. Good luck and have a great day!

He may not be eating due to dietary indiscretion from eating the bird or mouse or it could even be due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. I am afraid that if he is not drinking water he may be becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and most importantly start him on medications to make him feel better. I would not be overly concerned if she vomited most of it up quickly, indeed the salt is more likely to be a concern than the fish. Ensure she has fresh water available but do not allow her to over drink. Mild stomach upsets should settle within 24hoyrs but if persisting or she shows any signs of weakness she should be assessed by your vet

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should monitor your dog at home for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, abdominal pain, lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms you should take your dog to your local vets as an emergency. Typically, the symptoms of food intoxication commence within 2-6 hrs after ingestion. Inducing vomiting in dogs that ate bones is never recommended as it pose a risk of esophageal tear from the sharp bones. Salmonellosis is a potential risk after eating decomposing food, however, Salmonella infection is not common in dogs in general. Typically, the symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

I would recommend Oscar be evaluated by a veterinarian; hat is a large number of times that he has vomited, and with him not feeling well, I would recommend he be seen. There is the possibility that he ate something in addition to the mouse; and if the mouse caused such GI upset, he may need some medications to get his GI system normalized. I would recommend he be evaluated by his veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start any treatment that he may need. Good luck!

There are two things you can do: 1) nothing, just watch your dog for diarrhea and/or vomiting or paleness. If yoru dog vomits/gets diarrhea do the following: I would fast Bandit for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. Should he get lethargic, and/or pale (check his gums), he needs to be seen by a vet as the rat may have died of rodenticide. OR 2) if your dog ate the rat within the past 90 minutes, take him to a vet to have him regurgitate the rat with a medication called apomorphine.
