My dog ate a dead fish at the beach and is vomiting. What should I do?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he just ate the fish, you should take him to your local vets and they will make him vomit. If he had the fish over 1-1.5hrs ago, making him vomit will not be beneficial. In that case, you need to monitor him at home for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stools, abdominal pain, twitching, being unsteady on legs. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should take him to your local vets right away.

Poor Blue! Too much salt water from the ocean can make a dog vomit, and the excess salt plus the vomiting will cause him to be dehydrated. Make sure he has access to plenty of fresh water, and I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, he develops seizures (too much salt water can cause this), becomes uncoordinated, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

I would not be overly concerned if she vomited most of it up quickly, indeed the salt is more likely to be a concern than the fish. Ensure she has fresh water available but do not allow her to over drink. Mild stomach upsets should settle within 24hoyrs but if persisting or she shows any signs of weakness she should be assessed by your vet

As long as you have started her vaccinations then I wouldn’t think that you have done anything wrong. She may have consumed a little too much salt water, or it could be completely unrelated. I would consider feeding her a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice his morning. Please, do not offer Gracee anything to eat or drink for the next 3-4 hrs, then try very small amount of water (2-3 tablespoons). If she keeps it down, you should offer more every 30-40 min. If she takes it ok, you should try and offer her some bland food. Cooked chicken or other lean meat would be the best options. If she is eating, drinking and keeping everything down, you can slowly offer her more food and water and come back to her normal feeding routine over 2-3 days.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rex. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. Pancreatitis is common in his breed, especially after human food ingestion. Pancreatitis results in severe vomiting and diarrhea which will lead to dehydration. I also worry about the bones blocking or puncturing his intestines. The veterinarian will examine him and likely recommend blood work and x-rays of his belly. Based in these results, treatment can be started. I hope this information helps!
