My dog ate a cloth rag and is vomiting it up. What should I do now?

Poor girl. Let her vomit. If she vomits up the particles well then that is a good thing. However if she tries to vomit and cannot produce anything, or if she continues to vomit liquids and refuses food, then this is concerning for a potential blockage and she should be taken to your vet right away. So monitor her for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of a blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), refusing food, few feces, +/- abdominal pain, and lethargy. If she doesn't have any of these symptoms and can keep her food down well, then she is likely to be just fine. However for the future you should try to keep these harmful things out of her reach, because puppies are very curious and will put almost anything in their mouths, not realizing how harmful they can be.

You will have to monitor her in the next few days, it could pass without causing problems but it could also get stuck in the small intestines or stay in the stomach, in that case at some point you should see some acute changes such as lethargy, vomiting and lack of appetite. if that happens you will need to take her urgently to the vet to get it treated.

Poor guy. I can understand how worrisome this can be, especially when you are dealing with a foreign body ingestion, not knowing if it will pass or not. Hopefully the cloth was small and will pass through easily, which can take several days to a week in some cases. If he has vomited more than 3 times, then I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper exam and radiographs to check where the cloth is and see if it is already causing a blockage. Blockages will cause excessive vomiting (even water), lethargy and scant (few) feces. I do hope that he doesn't have a complete blockage, but he needs to be seen by your vet to determine if that is the case or not. At the very least the vet can prescribe antinausea medication to help control his vomiting and subsequently prevent him from becoming dehydrated as well. Best of luck to you and your pet Lucky. She could have an intestinal obstruction or possibly just an upset stomach. She should be examined by a vet to determine if she has an obstruction and your vet can take an abdominal x-ray to evaluate. She would need surgery to remove the towel, if an obstruction is found. If your vet does not see evidence of an obstruction than he/she can prescribe medications to help treat the vomiting.

It is possible that the cloth that Ghontu ate could cause a blockage in her intestines. If this is the case, it could become a life threatening surgical emergency. If Ghontu is not eating or drinking normally or if she begins vomiting, you should take her to a veterinarian immediately. Good luck! I hope Ghontu is feeling better soon.

Hopefully Blue has vomited up all the material that he ingested. Unfortunately at this stage if there is anymore it has likely already passed into the gut. If so it may pass through without problem especially if the scraps are small. Over the next few days you need to be really vigilant, if it gets stuck in the gut signs you will be looking for are depression, pain, vomit and diarrhoea, not wanting to eat. Go to the vet right away if you suspect any of these.

Hello. If she is eating, drinking & still passing stools, then she may not need surgery. You definitely want to increase her intake of fluids. Supply low sodium broths or stocks for her to drink in addition to her fresh water. Switch to a wet diet & add a moderate amount of additional liquid to this, but not too much. You do not want to dilute the nutritional density of her food too much. Take 2 slices of bread & slather each piece with a layer of Vaseline & try to get her to eat this a piece at a time. If you can get one slice in her now, you can do the second piece later on or this evening. Hopefully this will lubricate her gut & push the rest of the material out of her. But if she stops eating & vomits everything, becomes bloated or shows abdominal pain, you will need to make a decision about her care.
