My dog ate cloth and is acting sick. Should I worry about blockage?

Oh Rocky! I would recommend monitoring his eating and defecating closely. It is possible he will pass the material in his feces. IF at any time you feel Rocky is not eating, vomiting or not defecating I would recommend taking Rocky to the vet for x-rays to see if the cloth is causing a blockage of his intestines. IF he is acting normal I would feed him and allow him to have normal activity

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If kora is not exhibiting signs such as vomiting, lethargy, inappetance or abdominal pain then she is likely ok. If you notice these signs I would get kora seen by the vet and have x-rays performed to rule out an intestinal blockage. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Poor guy. I can understand how worrisome this can be, especially when you are dealing with a foreign body ingestion, not knowing if it will pass or not. Hopefully the cloth was small and will pass through easily, which can take several days to a week in some cases. If he has vomited more than 3 times, then I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper exam and radiographs to check where the cloth is and see if it is already causing a blockage. Blockages will cause excessive vomiting (even water), lethargy and scant (few) feces. I do hope that he doesn't have a complete blockage, but he needs to be seen by your vet to determine if that is the case or not. At the very least the vet can prescribe antinausea medication to help control his vomiting and subsequently prevent him from becoming dehydrated as well. Best of luck to you and your pet Lucky. How naughty of Charlie to do that. It sounds like he may have vomited it all up, which would be the best case scenario here. Since he is still passing stool and eating well, it is ok to monitor him for the next 24 hrs to see how things pan out. Try offering him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for the next few days, then slowly introduce his regular kibble back. If he continues to vomit, becomes lethargic, or has a loss of appetite then I would be concerned about a possible blockages and recommend he be seen. If you think she may have swallowed some string from her toy, I would be very concerned that she might have an intestinal blockage - vomiting, not eating, acting lethargic, and not having regular bowel movements are all common signs of this problem. If she does have a blockage, this is a life-threatening emergency that will require immediate surgery to remove the obstruction, so I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. The veterinarian there can examine her and take some x-rays to help determine if there is a blockage present, and will get her into surgery to remove it if a problem is found.

Sadly it is very possible that Onyx has a partial obstruction in the upper GI tract from swallowing the soft toy. I am glad that he is acting normally, but the vomiting after eating is very concerning. I recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and likely having x-rays taken to look for signs of an obstruction in the GI tract. The sooner, the better, to prevent possible damage to the GI tract, dehydration or more serious complications. Onyx may need surgery or a scoping procedure to remove an obstruction.

Hello. I honestly would not rush her into an emergency clinic based on one episode of vomiting. Eating well & having normal & regular bowel movements are definitely a sign of a healthy GI tract. A blockage would make her very sick. If she continues to vomit, quits eating, develops any diarrhea, then see your veterinarian, but there is no way 1/6 of a paper towel, even in a small dog, would cause a blockage.
