My dog ate cloth, is throwing up, and seems lethargic. What to do?

Mischievous Atticus! The size of the piece of blanket is not very large so hopefully none of it has become lodged anywhere in the GI tract. With any luck, he is just feeling out of sorts from the gastrointestinal upset he has caused himself to have. If you do decide to take him to the vet, regular x-rays will not say with certainly whether or not there is a partial obstruction because cloth material cannot be differentiated. Contrast material like barium is needed to do this, which is a liquid that travels through the GI tract over the course of several hours. X-rays are taken numerous times over the course of this time to see if the barium is traveling in a normal or abnormal fashion. Since he has been passing portions of it already, I am really not very worried about it. He however might really benefit from an anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medication. While there are over the counter options, something like Cerenia which can only be obtained via prescription would be a great choice in this instance. There are also several over the counter anti diarrheals available. If the vomiting and lethargy does continue to persist for another day or so, I would say to bite the bullet and bring him in for an exam. Hope this makes sense.

Hi. Poor Niko. It could be one of 2 things. The passing of the blanket is causing GI upset, or possibly some of it is stuck. I would recommend that if this continues tomorrow, then he needs xrays to check his GI tract

It is possible that the cloth that Ghontu ate could cause a blockage in her intestines. If this is the case, it could become a life threatening surgical emergency. If Ghontu is not eating or drinking normally or if she begins vomiting, you should take her to a veterinarian immediately. Good luck! I hope Ghontu is feeling better soon.

Poor girl. Let her vomit. If she vomits up the particles well then that is a good thing. However if she tries to vomit and cannot produce anything, or if she continues to vomit liquids and refuses food, then this is concerning for a potential blockage and she should be taken to your vet right away. So monitor her for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of a blockage which includes: excessive vomiting (even water), refusing food, few feces, +/- abdominal pain, and lethargy. If she doesn't have any of these symptoms and can keep her food down well, then she is likely to be just fine. However for the future you should try to keep these harmful things out of her reach, because puppies are very curious and will put almost anything in their mouths, not realizing how harmful they can be.

Hello. If Hannah vomits up the rag and you are sure the whole rag is out, you can try feeding her and seeing if she is bright, happy, eating and pooping well. If she continues to vomit then likely some rag is stuck and she will need surgery to remove it. Otherwise, if she is eating/pooping well, then just monitor her for the next few days, at which point it should be out of her system. Good luck with Hannah.

Sometimes the foreign body is small enough to pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing a problem and can be medically managed as it seems to be in your description with your veterinarian. However, sometimes foreign bodies do get stuck in the intestine and can cause an intestinal obstruction that requires surgery. it is good Marla is eating and has not vomited, but if you notice anytime in the next 48 hours that her lethargy is not improving, she loses her appetite, starts vomiting, or having diarrhea, I would recommend taking her in again. Even if the glove passes through the pyloric sphincter, it can get stuck elsewhere in the intestinal tract. Initially, waiting isn't considered harmful if the object is suspected to be small enough and believed to be passable, but if it is large enough, it may cause an obstruction and should be treated surgically. Again, signs to watch out for that would warrant another vet visit would be lack of appetite, continued lethargy or worsening lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea in the next 48 hours. I hope this helps! Hello. Unfortunately, this is going to be a waiting game to see if he still has some of the washcloth in his stomach & he may vomit it up or it will pass through his digestive tract. I do not think you need to worry about the soap. If it has not made him sick by now, it probably was not enough to cause a problem. But the cloth could, especially if it passes into his intestines & is unable to move. This will cause a blockage. Feed him as normal & hopefully the food will help things to pass. If at any time Kage loses his appetite, becomes lethargic, vomits multiple times or just seems uncomfortable in general, you will need to see your vet for additional diagnostics & treatments.
