My puppy ate clothing and is trying to vomit. What should I do?

Unfortunately, vomiting up a foreign body can only be done if the item was consumed in the past two hours, and given that you aren't sure when your pup ate your pillowcase, it may be too late to induce vomiting. There's nothing you can do to make her pass it quicker, and I would caution against using any human medications without veterinary approval or using a method you find on the internet as you may do harm to your pup. You can try giving her a slice of whole wheat bread now, and with every meal to form a ball of ingesta around the pillowcase to help cushion it as is passes through her GI tract. You can feed this piece of bread to her with every meal. I would monitor her for the next 72 hours of signs of obstruction, which include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, and constipation. Should you see any of those signs, please take her into the vet immediately. When you leave the house, I would recommend putting her in a crate, as that will keep her from getting into things while you are gone.

If she ate a significant amount of her bedding, it's definitely possible that she could have an intestinal obstruction. Normally, signs of an obstruction would include vomiting, lethargy, not eating, and not having bowel movements. It sounds like your pup is eating normally and having bowel movements regularly. Vomiting once or twice is not necessarily a concern is she is still eating find and acting normal - but if she has repeated episodes of vomiting, stops having bowel movements, or begins acting lethargic then I would recommend having her seen by a vet right away.

Hello. If Hannah vomits up the rag and you are sure the whole rag is out, you can try feeding her and seeing if she is bright, happy, eating and pooping well. If she continues to vomit then likely some rag is stuck and she will need surgery to remove it. Otherwise, if she is eating/pooping well, then just monitor her for the next few days, at which point it should be out of her system. Good luck with Hannah.

Poor guy. I can understand how worrisome this can be, especially when you are dealing with a foreign body ingestion, not knowing if it will pass or not. Hopefully the cloth was small and will pass through easily, which can take several days to a week in some cases. If he has vomited more than 3 times, then I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper exam and radiographs to check where the cloth is and see if it is already causing a blockage. Blockages will cause excessive vomiting (even water), lethargy and scant (few) feces. I do hope that he doesn't have a complete blockage, but he needs to be seen by your vet to determine if that is the case or not. At the very least the vet can prescribe antinausea medication to help control his vomiting and subsequently prevent him from becoming dehydrated as well. Best of luck to you and your pet Lucky. If he only vomited the one time, then I would continue to see how things go. If he continues to vomit and develops other symptoms such as refusal to eat, vomiting up water, or becoming lethargic, then I would definitely worry about a foreign body obstruction and get him seen right away. Since you can’t be sure how long ago this occurred I probably wouldn’t recommend making Hestia vomit because it may already be out of her stomach. All you can do now is watch for GI symptoms, like inappetance, vomiting, and diarrhea, as these could indicate a blockage. If you notice any of these symptoms it is best to take her in to her vet as soon as possible for xrays. If it was a small piece of cloth chances are good that she will pass it with no issues. Hello. If she is eating, drinking & still passing stools, then she may not need surgery. You definitely want to increase her intake of fluids. Supply low sodium broths or stocks for her to drink in addition to her fresh water. Switch to a wet diet & add a moderate amount of additional liquid to this, but not too much. You do not want to dilute the nutritional density of her food too much. Take 2 slices of bread & slather each piece with a layer of Vaseline & try to get her to eat this a piece at a time. If you can get one slice in her now, you can do the second piece later on or this evening. Hopefully this will lubricate her gut & push the rest of the material out of her. But if she stops eating & vomits everything, becomes bloated or shows abdominal pain, you will need to make a decision about her care.
