Is it safe to deworm my dog with diarrhea while she's in heat?

Potentially. It depends though on what the other medication is. Dewormers can upset the stomach or cause diarrhea which may decrease the absorption of other medications. Many female dogs will lose their appetite while in heat (on their period), which can last up to 3 weeks and generally occurs every 6 months if they are not spayed. If she is still playful, runs and barks, and does not have any diarrhea/is not vomiting, I would give her the heartworm pill on schedule. Best of luck! I am currently working in Belize and we have many other dewormers. Do you not have any veterinarians near you? A better dewormer would be pyrantel pamoate. You cannot get a 2g Ivermectin tablet into a small enough dose for a 1.4kg puppy. Don't even try as you will kill her.

It is safe to give it to him, but I would also have him seen by your vet first if possible. Heartgard rarely will cause an upset stomach but since he has had diarrhea on and off for 2 weeks I am more worried that he is becoming dehydrated. Your vet will be able to do a fecal and see if he has any parasites. Be sure they rule out giardia as well. They will be able to get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. The doctor was likely trying to eliminate other negative factors. Also be aware that you now have parvovirus in the environment and any pets who are not fully vaccinated could get infected. Losing a pet is hard. My condolences.

I would not deworm him when he is not feeling well unless you have a specific diagnosis that he needs the dewormer (example: a fecal test was run and you know he has roundworms). I would wait until he is feeling better.

Aurora-what a lovely name! I bet she's a cute little thing :) We typically recommend repeating deworming treatment every 3 weeks (21 days) in young pups as the deworming medication only acts on certain life-stages of the worms living inside the dog. If Aurora has a heavy worm burden inside you can expect to see some dead/almost dead worms passing in her stool-this is normal. If Aurora continues to have diarrhea a checkup with your regular vet would be recommended. Whilst internal parasites can be a common cause of soft stool in young dogs there can be a myriad of other possible causes, including coccida, parvo virus and inappropriate diet.
