Is deworming treatment normal for a dog diagnosed with parvovirus?

Yes, a dog can have parvo and worms at the same time. Parvo is life threatening and often deadly with no cure, so the treatment focus would be exclusively on symptomatic treatment for that instead of the worms. Deworming treatments can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and it would not be wise to give a dog who is already vomiting and experiencing diarrhea a drug that could potentially cause more of that. If the dog does recover from parvo virus, as it is frequently fatal, then he can be treated for worms.

Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you continue to follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Cleo as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. It really depends on the severity of their disease. If they have a mild case than it might help but if they have severe vomiting and diarrhea than they need to be hospitalized on iv fluids with medications to help control the vomiting, diarrhea, and secondary bacterial infections. Parvo can be a fatal disease if left untreated. Hope your puppies feel better soon.

I would check with your vet first to make sure it does not interfere with any other medications Kyah is on if she is still on a treatment for another stomach issue. If you don't know what type of worms Kyah has, you can bring a sample of her stool to your vet for testing so they can provide you with the correct deworming medication. If she is still having diarrhea even after a course of stomach medications, a recheck with your vet to rule out any other health issues such as food allergies, illnesses, GI problems, etc is also a good idea in addition.

It's best to wait until Jerry has recovered from the Parvo infection before giving the deworming tablet. If you give it now, she may vomit the medication and it will ultimately be ineffective. Worms often don't cause that many problems, so she would likely be fine to wait a few days while she recovers. However, it's best that you ask your vet doctor there about this.
