Is 600mg Clindamycin too much for my 80lb dog? What about side effects?

Hi, I took my dog to the vet today for his anal sac that was bleeding and was about to rupture. This was caused from him getting colitis after a dental cleaning. The vet gave him Clindamycin and he's taking 600 mg twice a day. On his first dosage he seems very mellow. We noticed the side effects could be diarrhea and vomiting. We don't want him to go through that again. Is this the correct dosage? It seems extremely high!! help!! I am worried now....

Poor Sonnie! Nearly any antibiotic can cause vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect, so I would not become overly concerned about that point. If Sonnie does develop this, call his vet and offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to allow his stomach to settle. As for the dosage, clindamycin has a wide dose range when treating abscesses. Sonnie is currently receiving 16 mg/kg, and this range can go up to 33mg/kg. Continue following the prescribed directions and call his vet if anything changes for him. I hope that all goes well!

You can contact your veterinarian to inform them about her reaction and they may be able to give her anti-nausea medications to control her signs. Is Clindacure safe for my small dog before dental anesthesia?
Clindamycin is a very safe antibiotic. Depending on the manufacturer they can have different concentrations. If you could post the number of milligrams per ML listed on the bottle it would help if the dosage is correct. However it does seem like a good dose me. There are no known risk of a pet being on clindamycin prior to anesthesia and in fact it is a very common drug before a dental cleaning is done.

Hi there. It would help to know how much your puppy weighs. But in general, I would not expect to see any serious issues from a one-time dose of clindamycin, even if it's a relatively high dose for her size. You might see some mild GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea) for the next 24 hours or so, but otherwise she should be just fine.

The dose for clindamycin is within the normal dose range, and the dose for tramadol is also within the normal dose range. You can ask your vet why they upped the doses for Chewy, but they are safe. I hope this helps.
