My cat has diarrhea after starting Clindamycin. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Cleo. Clindamycin is an antibiotic and can cause nausea, vomiting, a decreased appetite, and diarrhea. You can contact your veterinarian to inform them about her reaction and they may be able to give her anti-nausea medications to control her signs. Additionally, make sure you are administering this medication with food to decrease the side effects. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Sonnie! Nearly any antibiotic can cause vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect, so I would not become overly concerned about that point. If Sonnie does develop this, call his vet and offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to allow his stomach to settle. As for the dosage, clindamycin has a wide dose range when treating abscesses. Sonnie is currently receiving 16 mg/kg, and this range can go up to 33mg/kg. Continue following the prescribed directions and call his vet if anything changes for him. I hope that all goes well!

I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

Poor guy. It sounds like your little guy is having an adverse reaction to the medication. He needs to be seen for a rechk by your vet right away to have the diarrhea addressed and then to get him on an alternate medication that will hopefully agree with his system more. There are other medications that are a bit safer for cats that your vet can hopefully prescribe for him, depending on the type of infection he has. Until you can get him in to be seen its best to start some probiotics. You can start over the counter Culturelle and this can help restore some of his natural GI flora and can help some with the diarrhea as well until you can get him in to your vet. I would contact his veterinarian before discontinuing the medication. Be sure that Oliver has a meal before giving the medication as antibiotics can cause vomiting on an empty stomach. If he continues to have vomiting or diarrhea be sure to let his vet know and they may prescribe a different medication or something to give with the clavamox to help settle his stomach. You can get probiotics for cats at many pet stores, it may be worth starting him on this while he is on antibiotics. I hope Oliver is better soon. There is a dose range for clindamycin. We will be able to best help you if you know your cats current weight and can provide that inforrmation, if you know the concentration of the drug (mg/ml, should be on the package), and if you know how many ml you were instructed to give (should be on your syringe and the label on the bottle). If you are able to re post your question with that information we can let you know if the dose is in the dose range. But, as different diseases may be treated with a different dose, it will always be safer to verify with your vet as he or she prescribed the medication. If your kitty will eat her food when you add benefiber, it likely will help. The diarrhea could be a side effect of the antibiotic, so you may want to check with your vet about whether the antibiotic should be stopped or changed or the course finished anyway.
