Spayed cat nursing kitten: Why is her abdomen swollen and discharging?

It sounds as though Knox is exhibiting signs of a false pregnancy. Since she was spayed last month, it is not possible for her to actually become pregnant. Rarely, a portion of ovarian tissue (referred to as ovarian remnant syndrome) can remain after a spay, which then produces hormones and can cause signs of heat and possible pregnancy. I do recommend taking Knox to her vet for an exam and to consider blood hormone levels to determine if ovarian remnant syndrome is suspected. I am very sorry that Cookie is swollen and uncomfortable. I would advise separating her and the kitten for a while until this behavior ends, and Cookie's mammary gland heals. Use a cool compress to help with the swelling as well. A few times day, for 5 minutes. Also make sure that Cookie is not self-nursing, and if she does place an e-collar on her. Watch for signs of mastitis or mammary gland inflammation/ infection; discharge swelling (which is worsening) pain foul odor redness If you believe that Cookie could have mastitis I would advise taking her to a veterinarian for pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication and possibly antibiotics. Yes, this could be due to a false pregnancy. Storm should not still be feeding the seven month old kitten, that is way too old. You need to separate her completely from the kittens (as long as all are at least two months of age) so her milk can dry up. I'd take her into the vet to confirm she has a false pregnancy and to make a date to spay her. I hope this helps.

It can happen after the cat is spayed if they ovulated and were recently in heat before the surgery. It is secondary to hormonal influence. It should resolve on it's own. I hope this helps!

Sometimes mama cat's will let their kittens suckle much longer than is healthy. I would recommend separating the mom and her kitten, or you can have her wear a pet shirt or baby onesie to cover the nipples. You can apply warm compresses several times a day to the swollen gland. If it becomes hard, warm, seems painful, or if Zara has a poor appetite or a rectal temperature over 103, she should be seen by a vet as she may have developed mastitis (or an infection of the mammary gland) and would need antibiotics.

That discharge is very abnormal. My guess is that she may have a pyometra (uterine infection). I suggest you get her to a vet as soon as you can. If you are not near an emergency vet she can likely wait until morning as long as she is eating and drinking OK. If she is acting sick then you need to find an emergency vet right now. It's not likely to be due to false pregnancy, it looks more like it was due to trauma, if i had to guess this is probably because of the clamps used during the surgery to hold the drape to the skin, it;s actually quite common and nothing to worry about.
