Why is my cat's nipple bleeding, painful, and discharging from kitten?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I would be worried about mastitis (mammary gland infection) based on your description. Are the kittens nursing from that nipple? I would try to encourage them to nurse from all mammary glands, and if the problematic one is not being emptied, you may need to gently express it every few hours to help it empty. Warm compresses may help with this as well. Sometimes it is a problem with the kittens not being able to find the nipple, so you could also try clipping the hair around the affected gland to make it more visible and easier for the kittens to reach. Your baby may be suffering from mastitis (inflammation of the mammary gland). This is very painful and you really need to take her to the vet for an exam. and pain medicine and antibiotics if called for. In the meantime you can put warm moist compresses on the teat. This should relieve some of the pain temporarily.

Poor Jaffacake! I am very concerned she may have mammary tumors which are often cancer, and potentially an infectious cat disease causing her breathing issues. If at all possible she really needs a full examination by a vet, blood work to evaluate her internal organ status, and testing for infectious diseases. I'd be very concerned that Ginger could have mastitis, which is an infection of the mammary glands that can occur after kittens are weaned. Mastitis can be fatal without treatment, and it does require antibiotics. I would take her into a vet immediately for treatment. Best of luck.

Cold packs may help reduce swelling and relieve pain. I would recommend a check up anyway as the mammary glands may be inflamed and infected and a mastitis may be present. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed.

I strongly recommend you keep the two cats separated for at least 3-4weeks or place a coat on Tappi which will cover the area in order to prevent nursing and break this cycle of behavior. Constant nursong will lead to inflammation and possible infection of the glands and is a vicious cycle of stimulation and irritation

This is probably normal lochia discharge that you will see as vaginal discharge for several week post-queening. If she is eating well, the kittens are nursing, and all the nipples have normal milk discharge, she is probably fine. If Princess stops eating, or has vomiting or diarrhea, or seems weak, or has signs of swollen nipples and mastitis, she needs to see a vet right away. Hope that helps!
