My spayed dog has a swollen nipple and milk after nursing kittens.

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

I believe my dog is spayed, but i got two new kitten that started to nurse on her and know she is producing milk and its getting quite swollen around one nipple . Dont know what to do!!!!

I am very sorry that Cookie is swollen and uncomfortable. I would advise separating her and the kitten for a while until this behavior ends, and Cookie's mammary gland heals. Use a cool compress to help with the swelling as well. A few times day, for 5 minutes. Also make sure that Cookie is not self-nursing, and if she does place an e-collar on her.

Watch for signs of mastitis or mammary gland inflammation/ infection;
discharge
swelling (which is worsening)
pain
foul odor
redness

If you believe that Cookie could have mastitis I would advise taking her to a veterinarian for pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication and possibly antibiotics.

Hello. If Lulu just weaned her kittens shortly before having her spay surgery, then most likely this is just the tissues in the intermediary phase before they begin to shrink down. If Lulu will allow you to place a warm compress on the nipples, this will assist in the blood flow necessary to help bring the swelling down. If the tissues become harder, red, or inflamed, or you notice any discharge from the nipples, please contact your veterinarian in case she requires additional treatment or medications like antibiotics. My spayed dog's large mammary glands are bothering her. Will they shrink?

Yes, Sadie's mammary glands will eventually return back to a normal size, although it may take several months. If you notice any swelling, discharge, or masses in the area of her mammary glands, please have her seen by a veterinarian, as she may have an infection. You can put an e-collar (cone) on her for the next week or two to help prevent her from licking at the area.

My recently spayed cat's nipples are swollen and she's lactating?

It sounds as though Knox is exhibiting signs of a false pregnancy. Since she was spayed last month, it is not possible for her to actually become pregnant. Rarely, a portion of ovarian tissue (referred to as ovarian remnant syndrome) can remain after a spay, which then produces hormones and can cause signs of heat and possible pregnancy. I do recommend taking Knox to her vet for an exam and to consider blood hormone levels to determine if ovarian remnant syndrome is suspected. Why is my dog's nipple swollen after giving birth, but she's not in pain?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. The pups may not be nursing that gland as often resulting in engorgement. I recommend encouraging the pups to use that gland. The other concern I have is that mastitis could be starting. Ideally she should see her veterinarian to ensure that this is not the case. I hope this information helps!

Why is my unspayed female puppy's nipple red, swollen, and misshapen?

Hello. This is nothing to be overly concerned about. Manakoa is old enough that there are hormones circulating & this nipple just seems to be a little more sensitive to the effects of estrogen at this point in time. If you were planning on spaying her, this is a good time to consider doing so, but otherwise, as long as the nipple does not continue to show further hormonal influence, it should not significantly affect her. Why are my unspayed puppy's nipples swollen before her spay?

There are a couple of reasons that you might be seeing swelling with Lily's mammary glands. If she has had a first heat cycle (which can sometimes be a "silent" heat or difficult to see) that would be the most likely possbility. I would recommend that your vet examine her tomorrow to see what they think is going on. They will likely still be able to do her spay tomorrow. I hope that was helpful.
