My first-time pregnant cat is nervous. How can I best care for her?

Hello. Make sure your Momma cat has a quiet, safe & secure area to have her kittens, away from noise, other pets, & weather. You can begin feeding her a good kitten food ( dry or canned ) and continue the kitten food up until the kittens are weaned . This will give her extra calories to maintain her pregnancy & provide plenty of rich milk for her kittens. She will probably not leave her babies for the first couple of days, so make sure her litter box, food & water are close by. At this point in her pregnancy, you should feed her kitten food. If she does turn out to not be pregnant, it will not hurt her to feed the kitten food right now. You will feed her this diet until the kittens are weaned and no longer dependent upon her for milk. The dry cat food is just fine for her. Do not give her anything like milk as this may upset her stomach. You should also talk to your veterinarian about deworming her for parasites. Some dewormers are safe to use in pregnancy and others are not so you will want to check what you have available with your local products. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is fines as long as she does eat and drink. Sometimes a cat's preference changes, especially when under a hormonal influence such as pregnancy. Feed her a good quality wet food twice daily and from day 40 of pregnancy , feed her canned kitten food as she will need the extra nutrition for the kittens' growth.

I would recommend to keep her indoors only since she is due to have the kittens any day now. Allow her to have plenty of space away from the other cats so that she can be undisturbed by them for a period of time if she chooses to be. Nesting boxes are great, but ultimately she will choose to whelp wherever she is most comfortable. Clean, quiet areas where she can be away from the other cats is best. While it is possible for a cat to become pregnant at such a young age, it is definitely not typical. Usually around five or six months of age is the earliest I am accustomed to seeing pregnant cats, but four months is technically possible. In terms of care and diet, I usually recommend that pregnant cats are fed a diet of kitten food rather than adult food until they have weaned their kittens entirely. I do want to caution you however that it is not uncommon for very young cats that become mothers sometimes do not treat their young appropriately. They often abandon their young or even injure them intentionally in some cases. In addition to any other special care they might need, pregnant cats must not receive most medications, including flea / tick medications. They can be toxic to the fetuses. If you want to be sure of the pregnancy status, a veterinarian will need to perform an ultrasound after a certain period of time, or an x-ray after even more time. Hope this makes sense.

She needs food, water and a litter box or a place to go to the bathroom for basic care. As far as giving birth goes, provide her a comfortable resting place. Motherly instincts will kick in when it is time and she will take care of the babies for you. If she has a problem delivering them, then you will need to call a vet or find a shelter than can help you with her care. Birth is messy so make sure you have towels and blankets to change out so they stay clean and dry.

It's recommend to wait until after Sam has her kittens before vaccinating her. Keep her indoors all the time and away from other cats if you don't know their vaccine status. Keep her away from unvaccinated cats, who can make her sick. Best of luck.
