I found a pregnant cat. What food should I feed her? Is dry food safe?

It is fines as long as she does eat and drink. Sometimes a cat's preference changes, especially when under a hormonal influence such as pregnancy. Feed her a good quality wet food twice daily and from day 40 of pregnancy , feed her canned kitten food as she will need the extra nutrition for the kittens' growth.

Cats are typically pregnant for 63-65 days, but pregnancy can range from 58-70 days. The pregnancy is divided into trimesters, and a healthy, well-fed queen will experience steady weight gain throughout the pregnancy. This weight gain appears to function as energy storage to support upcoming lactation. Overfeeding can result in obesity at the end of pregnancy, which increases the risk for difficult or prolonged labor and added stress on the kittens. Conversely, underfeeding during pregnancy can result in embryo loss, abnormal fetal development, spontaneous abortion or stillbirth, small litter size, and low birth-weight kittens who fail to thrive. It is important that the queen not lose weight or condition during this time, so monitor her weight and body condition, increasing food as needed. The other cats can eat this food as long as they do not suffer from kidney disease. It may, however, lead to weight gain due to the increased calories this diet will provide. I would feed her wet/canned kitten food during the last three weeks of pregnancy so she hass enough nutrition for making her babies grow properly. Oncee she has given birth you can keep feeding her the kitten food, so there will be an easy transition when the kittens will start to eat solid food at around 6 weeks. Find homes for them now, but do not give them away before they are 12 weeks old, as they will still need mama to teach them to be good kitties, to hunt, what is safe, what is not, etc. They will also need their siblings to play and play hunt and get coordination.

Cats are gourmets....if you feed her boiled chicken and she likes it better than her wet food, then she will shun her wet food and just eat her favourite food. Try offering her tinned kitten food rather than her usual wet food. This would be healthier than chicken only.

Great question! Pregnant cats are definitely hungrier than normal, and you can feed her up to double her normal amount safely. I would try portioning out her food so she gets multiple meals a day, which will hopefully satisfy her hunger. I hope this helps!

Hello. Make sure your Momma cat has a quiet, safe & secure area to have her kittens, away from noise, other pets, & weather. You can begin feeding her a good kitten food ( dry or canned ) and continue the kitten food up until the kittens are weaned . This will give her extra calories to maintain her pregnancy & provide plenty of rich milk for her kittens.
