My newly adopted cat has diarrhea then no poop. Is this normal?

Hi there. After an episode of diarrhea, it's common for a cat to not poop for a day or two, since it takes time for the intestine to fill up again with solid stool. So if she's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, not vomiting, active, etc.), I wouldn't be concerned - she'll poop when she's ready :)

It is very common for a cat to not have any bowel movement for a couple of days after having diarrhea because it takes time for stool to build up again in the colon after an episode of diarrhea. I would be concerned if she is straining to defecate without producing any stool, vomiting or not eating. If everything seems normal other than the lack of stool production, then I would just give it a little more time. My guess is that she will pass some stool tonight or tomorrow. If she has not passed stool by tomorrow night, I would have her examined on Friday before going into the weekend. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. If they are acting normal and eating fine then it may just be from the 12 hour fast and loose stools. You could monitor for another day and see if they go. If not or they start straining to defecate and/or vomit then they should be examined by your vet for treatment.

I'm so sorry to hear that Percy developed diarrhea. It is very common for cats to not defecate for a period of 24-72 hours after having diarrhea. It takes some time for stool to build up again after an episode of diarrhea. So, as long as Percy is eating well, acting normally and not straining to defecate, I would not worry about the lack of stool for 24 hours. I would be sure to have your veterinarian check a stool sample if that has not already been done. Once he does pass normal stool, you can slowly (over a period of 3-4 days) transition him back to his normal diet. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Poor Meep! It sounds like he's very nervous, and still adjusting to his new environment. Moving to a new home is very stressful for cats, so this is not unexpected. It's likely that he hasn't had a bowel movement because he hasn't been eating well - if nothing is going in, there won't be anything to come out :) This problem should resolve itself within the next couple of days now that he is eating. Unless you have seen him straining in the litter box, this should not be any cause for concern. It's also very normal for cats not to drink much water - they are adapted for living in very dry areas. If he is eating wet food, he may not drink any water at all. Since it sounds like he's starting to settle in and things are improving, I would suggest giving Meep more time to get used to things. Make sure that he has his own room with his food and water bowls, litter box, and toys and hiding spaces so that he feels safe. He will start to venture out into the rest of the house as he gets more comfortable. You can also try using Feliway pheromone diffusers in his room and around the house to help reduce his stress and make him more comfortable.

I'm sorry Leyla hasn't been well! Given that she had diarrhea, it's not surprising that she hasn't passed a stool today. You often see a period where a cat won't pass feces after having diarrhea, and I wouldn't be too concerned about that just yet. As for not urinating, she could be dehydrated from the diarrhea and sickness, and I would add some low sodium chicken broth in with her chicken to get more moisture into her. You can also offer her some wet food. If she still hasn't peed by tomorrow, then I would be more concerned and take her back into the vet right away. I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should offer a small amount of food about 3-4 times daily and in really small kittens, every few hours might be needed. Eliminations and the frequency thereof, are dependent on many things depending on food intake, type of food, water intake etc. As long as she is not straining and trying to poop, it could be up to another 24-36 hours. She is getting accustomed to her new and that is probably slowing up the fecal elimination process. Again, no straining to have a bowel movement usually means that everything is ok, especially if the kitten is eating and drinking normally. Just keep monitoring for a bowel movement and monitor behavior, appetite, etc. If things change and you are unsure have your veterinarian evaluate the kitten. I hope everything works out ok.
