My cat had diarrhea, now she's constipated. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Cat had diarrhea then we have her medicine to stop diarrhea...and it worked but she has not had any type of BM at all yesterday and today. She is eating, we added pumpkin to her food still nothing. She is eating and drinking.....sleeping... doesn't seem in pain or uncomfortable. How long could she be constipated? Should I be worried? We used to put a small amount of Miralax in wet food but stopped when she got diarrhea....should we continue. She eats Iams wet and Science Diet dry.

It is very common for a cat to not have any bowel movement for a couple of days after having diarrhea because it takes time for stool to build up again in the colon after an episode of diarrhea. I would be concerned if she is straining to defecate without producing any stool, vomiting or not eating. If everything seems normal other than the lack of stool production, then I would just give it a little more time. My guess is that she will pass some stool tonight or tomorrow. If she has not passed stool by tomorrow night, I would have her examined on Friday before going into the weekend.

    It can be very normal for the gastrointestinal tract to slow down after a bout of diarrhea and sometimes there is no stool for a few days. If Clara is straining to defecate without producing stool there may be concern for constipation so you should try to monitor her in the litter box. If she’s eating normally with no vomiting I would not be concerned about a lack of stool for 3-5 days, but you may want to check in with your vet as well to see what they would recommend.

Hi there. After an episode of diarrhea, it's common for a cat to not poop for a day or two, since it takes time for the intestine to fill up again with solid stool. So if she's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, not vomiting, active, etc.), I wouldn't be concerned - she'll poop when she's ready :)

I'm so sorry to hear that Percy developed diarrhea. It is very common for cats to not defecate for a period of 24-72 hours after having diarrhea. It takes some time for stool to build up again after an episode of diarrhea. So, as long as Percy is eating well, acting normally and not straining to defecate, I would not worry about the lack of stool for 24 hours. I would be sure to have your veterinarian check a stool sample if that has not already been done. Once he does pass normal stool, you can slowly (over a period of 3-4 days) transition him back to his normal diet. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. I'm sorry Leyla hasn't been well! Given that she had diarrhea, it's not surprising that she hasn't passed a stool today. You often see a period where a cat won't pass feces after having diarrhea, and I wouldn't be too concerned about that just yet. As for not urinating, she could be dehydrated from the diarrhea and sickness, and I would add some low sodium chicken broth in with her chicken to get more moisture into her. You can also offer her some wet food. If she still hasn't peed by tomorrow, then I would be more concerned and take her back into the vet right away. I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Junie. Most of the time, it will take a while for a cat to have a bowel movement after a bout of colitis. So hopefully this is the case and she is not constipated. If she is eating and drinking normally again, then she should have a bowel movement soon. If she is straining to defecate, then this is more indicative of constipation. Sometimes feeding a bit of canned pumpkin can help. Most of the time, you need to contact her veterinarian though. I hope this information helps!

If they are acting normal and eating fine then it may just be from the 12 hour fast and loose stools. You could monitor for another day and see if they go. If not or they start straining to defecate and/or vomit then they should be examined by your vet for treatment.

IT is possible that Myrtle is not passing stool is secondary to the diarrhea. Sometimes after a few days of diarrhea it will take a few days for fecal material to build back up in the colon and produce a normal bowel movement. I would not be concerned if Myrtle does not defecate for a few days as long as she is eating and playing. Typically I would recommend picking 1 food and sticking with it. switching foods can cause diarrhea/soft stool. Some cats are picker than other about the food or dry vs wet. I would recommend feeding whatever you find Myrtle likes to eat. hope that helps
