Cats not pooping after diarrhea & fast. Should I be concerned?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 16 lbs

2 indoor cats had loose stools last week for ~3 days. Vet suggested watchful waiting & 12 hr fast. After fast, gradually reintroduced wet and dry food. Now having opposite problem: Cats haven't had ANY BMs: One cat for 2.5 days, another for 36hrs. Both are eating, drinking, playing, and urinating normally. No "straining" trips to litter box. Wondering if the lack of BMs due to the loose stools last week and if my level of worry (which is high due to anxiety disorder) is justified.

If they are acting normal and eating fine then it may just be from the 12 hour fast and loose stools. You could monitor for another day and see if they go. If not or they start straining to defecate and/or vomit then they should be examined by your vet for treatment.
