My 8-week-old kitten isn't pooping. Is this normal for a new kitten?

How often should an 8 week old kitten be pooping, urinating and eating. I got the kitten yesterday and it eats, plays and urinates in the litter box but it wont poop. I feed it wet food and mix some water to hep get some water into its system because it doesnt drink water when i put it in a bowl but i still put the bowl nest to the food bowl. This morning i saw some poop on its bottom but i checked the litter box and saw nothin and checked everywhere else. What do i do and is the kitten alright?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should offer a small amount of food about 3-4 times daily and in really small kittens, every few hours might be needed. Eliminations and the frequency thereof, are dependent on many things depending on food intake, type of food, water intake etc. As long as she is not straining and trying to poop, it could be up to another 24-36 hours. She is getting accustomed to her new and that is probably slowing up the fecal elimination process. Again, no straining to have a bowel movement usually means that everything is ok, especially if the kitten is eating and drinking normally. Just keep monitoring for a bowel movement and monitor behavior, appetite, etc. If things change and you are unsure have your veterinarian evaluate the kitten. I hope everything works out ok.

    Hi there. No, kittens should defecate 1-2 times/day. Is your kitten acting normally otherwise? I would monitor closely for any appetite change, vomiting, lethargy. If you note any of that, combine with lack of defecation, I would recommend having a vet check.

    As long as he is acting ok, eating normally, and not straining to defecate then you can monitor him. Maybe he just didn't need to go or he may have possibly gone outside of the litter box somewhere. Adding an additional litter box is a good idea. You could also add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his food to increase the amount of fiber he is getting. If you notice any abnormal signs then have your vet take a look at him to make sure he is not constipated. Also, make sure to feed him a high quality cat food with plenty of fresh water to drink.     As long as your kitten isn't straining to poop you can wait a day. You can also take a warm cloth to wipe under the tail to stimulate it to go. Having another box with a different litter may help and that may show you which kind the kitten prefers.     I would keep his feeding schedule the same so he doesn’t get dehydrated and weak from a low blood sugar. If you have a recital thermometer sometimes gently inserting this can help remove poop and stimulate them to go more. Your vet can also pass a fecal loop or prescribe a stimulant or softener to help the kitten go

I am not sure how many days she has gone without having a bowel movement. But if she is attempting to poop and straining, then she should see a vet immediately for an enema to help her go and then treatment for long term care. However, if she is not straining and it has been less than 3-4 days since she has pooped, give her time to adjust to whatever new things may be going on around her. Offer her food (Canned food is best @ this age or kitten formula if she has not transitioned yet) like normal and monitor her the next few days to see if she finally goes. Cats are notorious for holding their bowels when they are recently adopted, move, or there's a new introduction to the home. And finally, if you are seeing any other symptoms such as vomiting, decreased appetite, or straining, then Olly should be seen by your vet right away. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boba. As long as she is eating, gaining weight and seems comfortable, she should defecate soon. Make sure you are stimulating her after each meal. Apply a warm cotton ball to her genital area. This replicates the mother licking her and will help her to urinate and defecate. If she stops eating or her belly appears distended, then she needs to see a veterinarian. In this case, an enema may be warranted. I hope this information helps!

Simba may be going in the other cat's litter tray, and I would try to see if you can follow him around to see if you can catch him pooping in the other tray. Kittens do not necessarily poop right after a meal, and it could be he is pooping at night in the other tray while you are sleeping. Given that he is acting normal, I wouldn't be to concerned. If he wasn't pooping at all, you would see other signs lack of appetite, potentially vomiting, straining to poop, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

My new stray kitten can't poop and seems to be in pain. What to do?
Hi and thank you for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the kitten is less than 8 weeks old, it should be fed milk replacer and not cat food. Kittens digestive systems are not yet mature enough to handle regular food and giving them this may cause stomach upset. If the kitten cannot go to the bathroom or is having trouble doing this, you can stimulate her to go by rubbing her underside with a warm washcloth. There is also a congenital abnormality where kittens are born without a anus and therefore cannot defecate called atresia ani. It is rare but can occur. If you have tried to get her to defecate and she is still not going, you may need to take her into her veterinarian for further examination. Best of luck!

My new 5-month-old kitten isn't pooping. Could he be constipated?
Young kittens will normally toilet frequently, often up to 6 times a day but I would be very concerned by repeated trips to the tray without producing anything as this may indicate an obstruction or severe spasm and inflammation which is quite common in cats and can be triggered by stressful events such as moving house. I recommend an urgent vet check to determine if he is constipated or bladder pain and to prescribe the most appropriate treatment and ongoing management to prevent recurrence. In the meantime I would try to encourage fluids with flavoured water (freshly boiled chicken broth or a little cod liver oil on the water bowl) and provide wet food to maximise fluid intake which can help soften stool and flush the bladder

If you just got her on Friday, it may be the move has stressed her out a bit and she needs a few days to adjust. However, there can be other causes such as viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections that may cause decreased appetite potentially. It is good to hear she is having normal bowel movements and is urinating, however. You can try heating up her food a bit to bring out the flavor and try feeding small amounts frequently. If a couple more days go by and she still has not eaten, I would recommend she see her veterinarian just to make sure there is nothing more serious going on. I hope this helps!
