My kitten has roundworms. Is this normal, and how do I treat them?

They may or may not be related to the deworming today, but either way they definitely roundworms! Call your vet to let them know what you saw. Chances are that the dewormer they used today will be enough to treat them. Make sure to repeat the deworming in 3-4 weeks to make sure the infection is completely taken care of!

Yes - a wormer designed for roundworms is the best option. Be sure to follow all directions as regards minimum age for use (some should not be used before 9weeks etc), correct species and weight and to repeat treatment at the correct frequency. If she is vomiting frequently, a spot on medication may be more useful to ensure she does not vomit the oral treatment before it has time to work. Your vets office can advise on the most appropriate product available in your area

Yes, worms can be passed from mom to babies. Most kittens will have 1-2 dewormings before they are fully weaned from mom once they are a bit older. It is best to talk to your vet to see if it's safe to deworm the mother and when the kittens can get started on their own deworming protocol.

Poor Luna! There are many different parasites that she could have been passing in her stool -- roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. She most likely acquired parasites from her mother either through the placenta or milk. Pyrantel pamoate is a common dewormer used to treat both roundworms and hookworms, but it is not typically started until 2 weeks of age. However, this medication is extremely safe and may be used off-label prior to 2 weeks of age. Ideally, I do recommend taking Luna to a vet to first determine the type of parasite present, and then determine the best treatment for her. It is important to note that not every dewormer treats every type of parasite. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Luna!

All kittens have worms. Get some kitten wormer today and worm them. Tell your children to wash their hands after handling the kittens and they should be fine. It only takes a few hours to get rid of the worms. However you will need to worm them again on about two weeks to kill the worms that have hatched from eggs present. If your children are very young and not able to comprehend that they will have to wash their hands, then it may be a good idea to separate them from the kittens for the next 2-3 weeks until the kittens have had their two doses of wormer.

Hello. Just about all kittens will have roundworms & this can definitely contribute to a pot-bellied appearance. You should be able to find a kitten wormer with pyrantel pamoate at any pet store. Hello. As the dewormer works (and yes it is that fast) the worms that were inside your kitten will be passed out in the poop. This may continue to happen for the next few days. Make sure you follow the deworming protocol that your vet has suggested as the various stages of the worms need to be killed at different times, so a one-time shot won't necessarily work depending on the product. Also, roundworms can be contracted by people, and the eggs are shed through the feces, so if you are 'eating' (fecal bits on your pillow and your face goes on this) the feces then you could get the worms. The shedding period will last until the burden is gone, so I would give it a couple months. It would be very unlikely for you to contract worms through this method however. Good luck with Newt!
