My kitten pooped worms after deworming. Is this normal? Will he be okay?

If she is pooping out worms, that means that the dewormer is working. She may need to be dewormed several times due to the life cycle of the worms. I would also recommend having a fecal exam done at a veterinary clinic since not all dewormers kill all types of worms and parasites. Many pets can be infected with multiple types of worms at the same time.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, Piggy is very cute, I am sorry she isn't feeling well. Animals with high burdens (large numbers) of worms can both vomit and poop out the worms and this can be normal. The concerning part of this for Piggy is that she was given a very strong medication to stop vomiting, and is vomiting anyways. This might be a sign that she has such a large number of worms that they might be causing a blockage in her intestines so that they cannot flow through. I recommend monitoring Piggy very carefully. If she continues to vomit, isn't eating, isn't pooping at all, or if she seems weak, tired, sore or bloated in her abdomen/stomach, then I would get her to a vet right away for x-rays as she might need surgery. Another possible but less likely condition is called an intussusception (where the intestines 'telescope' inside itself and cause death to that part of the intestine) and will cause the same signs as above, and requires surgery to fix. These conditions are unlikely to happen but important to watch for. If she is otherwise eating and keeping some food down, pooping, playing and acting normally, then just continue to monitor her and you will likely see the worms coming through her poop soon. This can be a normal response to the deworming pill. I recommend giving a bland diet for a couple days such as boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, or low fat cottage cheese. If it continues after a couple days, or he stops eating/drinking, Meow should be seen by a veterinarian in the case he needs medical treatment/care.

Hello. As the dewormer works (and yes it is that fast) the worms that were inside your kitten will be passed out in the poop. This may continue to happen for the next few days. Make sure you follow the deworming protocol that your vet has suggested as the various stages of the worms need to be killed at different times, so a one-time shot won't necessarily work depending on the product. Also, roundworms can be contracted by people, and the eggs are shed through the feces, so if you are 'eating' (fecal bits on your pillow and your face goes on this) the feces then you could get the worms. The shedding period will last until the burden is gone, so I would give it a couple months. It would be very unlikely for you to contract worms through this method however. Good luck with Newt!

This is not uncommon to see. The dewormer works by paralyzing the worms and they are sometimes only partially affected by the drug. The fact that they are coming out shows that it's working to a certain degree; and the worms will likely die soon. No need to worry. Keep up with the deworming schedule as prescribed by your vet and she should be rid of them soon.

I would recommend rechecking a stool sample. Parasites are not consistent shedders so he may also had a different intestinal parasites that the dewormer didn't cover and may need something else. It is normal to see some blood and diarrhea when giving worming treatment. These symptoms usually last for only two to three days. Because Gypsy is so young, it will take more than one treatment to kill all the worms. The treatment you gave now will kill the adults already in her system, and the next treatment will kill the ones who have yet to become adults. If the blood in the diarrhea persists longer than 3 days, I would take her into your vet, as there may be another cause for these symptoms.
