My kitten has roundworms. Dewormed today. Is it working? Am I at risk?

They may or may not be related to the deworming today, but either way they definitely roundworms! Call your vet to let them know what you saw. Chances are that the dewormer they used today will be enough to treat them. Make sure to repeat the deworming in 3-4 weeks to make sure the infection is completely taken care of!

This is not uncommon to see. The dewormer works by paralyzing the worms and they are sometimes only partially affected by the drug. The fact that they are coming out shows that it's working to a certain degree; and the worms will likely die soon. No need to worry. Keep up with the deworming schedule as prescribed by your vet and she should be rid of them soon.

It could be they had worms previously and you didn't know it. It sometimes can take until there is a heavy infestation of worms for you to see them in vomit or feces. Typically only eggs are passed in the feces, and those eggs can be seen with a microscope, not the naked eye. You have to repeat the deworming treatment to kill all the worms. The first one treats the adults already present, while the second in two weeks will kill the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Hopefully you will stop seeing dead worms in the next couple of days, but it means the treatment is working. Best of luck.

All kittens have worms. Get some kitten wormer today and worm them. Tell your children to wash their hands after handling the kittens and they should be fine. It only takes a few hours to get rid of the worms. However you will need to worm them again on about two weeks to kill the worms that have hatched from eggs present. If your children are very young and not able to comprehend that they will have to wash their hands, then it may be a good idea to separate them from the kittens for the next 2-3 weeks until the kittens have had their two doses of wormer.

Profender is absorbed rapidly through the skin into the bloodstream and ultimately reaches the gastrointestinal tract where it is effective in killing susceptible parasites (roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms). Profender will kill susceptible parasites that are present in the intestine at the time of treatment. Cats should receive treatments every 3 months and kittens should receive treatment at 8 and 12 weeks and every 3 months thereafter to prevent future infestations. Reinfection can occur from the environment and contact with other infected pets. She may not vomit any worms or pass them out of the stools. It depends what stage of the life cycle the worms are in and which species of worm you are referring to. If you don't see any worms it does not mean it is not working. There are several parasites that are zoonotic (transmissible to people) that may be afflicting her right now. Therefore to be safe and preventative, I would recommend locking her out of your room until you can get her tested and get a clean bill of health status for your kitty. : ) The likelihood of you actually getting infested with worms is low if you practice good hygiene; however, if you want to be 100% certain, just don't allow her on the bed anymore until you are sure. And for the record, there were only a few cases of people getting infested with Roundworms, so the chances of transmission for that worm is very low. However, there can be other worms or parasites present in her stool that are microscopic so you would not be able to tell they are there until her stool is examined at the vet.

Generally speaking adult cats tend to be less sensitive to G.I. parasites and kittens. Also for many G.I. parasites they have to be passed in the feces and then spend a certain amount of time maturing before they become re-infective. So if you do a good job of cleaning the litter box frequently there's a lower risk of infection to your adult cat. If your adult cat is on a monthly heartworm preventative many of them also include a deworming medication. There are over-the-counter deworming medications you could consider giving to both cats however it's not guaranteed to clear all possible G.I. parasites. you could also discuss with your veterinarian about your inability to get a fecal sample and if they would be willing to just give a broad-spectrum deworming medication to your kitten.
