My 2-day-old kitten has worms and bleeding. Can she be treated?

I was stimulating my orphaned newborn cat after feeding and suddenly I saw a small half a centimeter worm, then I saw bleeding. She's two days old and I don't know if she can be treated. Can she?

Poor Luna! There are many different parasites that she could have been passing in her stool -- roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. She most likely acquired parasites from her mother either through the placenta or milk. Pyrantel pamoate is a common dewormer used to treat both roundworms and hookworms, but it is not typically started until 2 weeks of age. However, this medication is extremely safe and may be used off-label prior to 2 weeks of age. Ideally, I do recommend taking Luna to a vet to first determine the type of parasite present, and then determine the best treatment for her. It is important to note that not every dewormer treats every type of parasite. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Luna!

You can treat for them concurrently, and I would recommend getting her dewormed to treat her tapeworms. Tapeworms come from ingestion of fleas, so I would also ensure that she doesn't have a flea infection as well. Good luck!

It is normal to see some blood and diarrhea when giving worming treatment. These symptoms usually last for only two to three days. Because Gypsy is so young, it will take more than one treatment to kill all the worms. The treatment you gave now will kill the adults already in her system, and the next treatment will kill the ones who have yet to become adults. If the blood in the diarrhea persists longer than 3 days, I would take her into your vet, as there may be another cause for these symptoms.

I usually do not recommend using Praziquantel in lactating mother cats, Pyrantel Pamoate is usually fine and they can be dewormed from around 4 weeks of age. flea treatment can be given as soon as 2 days of age-- the ONLY safe product is Frontline spray.

Nursing cat has worms, vomiting, pale gums. Vet or home treatment?

The kittens should be eating solid food by now so hopefully as they stop nursing she will gain weight back. Parasites multiply when animals are pregnant so they can infect the next generation. Both Tia and the kittens will need to be dewormed so I would take them all in to your veterinarian. They will examine the mother and if she looks pale that is a sign of anemia so they may run blood tests to make sure everything is normal. Then they will check a fecal to identify the parasites and prescribe the right deworming medicine for Tia and also give a safe one to the kittens. Cat's worms returned after treatment. Why is she peeing blood?

Depending on the parasite, deworming typicallyrequires two (or more) treatments. The second treatment should be administered 2-3 weeks after the first. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose the specific parasites so the appropriate medication can be dispensed and to confirm clearance. If there are still parasites, repeat the deworming and then place Olivia on a monthly preventative such as HeartGard or Sentinel.

My 5-week-old kitten has a long worm. Is it too young for meds?

I'm sorry but without seeing the worm i am not 100% sure what you are talking about. The most common worm, and the one you probably saw, is roundworms. A meningeal worm is highly uncommon and it would not come out the anus. Meningeal worms live in the brain. The kitten is not too young for dewormer; they can start being dewormed as early as two weeks of age with a drug called Strongid (pyrantel pamoate). I suggest you call another vet clinic or go to your local VETCO clinic to have the kitten dewormed. Deworming should be done every 3-4 weeks until the kitten is 4 months old.
