My 4-month kitten has loose, paste-like poop & drags bum. What to do?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Diarrhea or loose stools can be common in kittens with intestinal parasites. I would recommend running a fecal test at your veterinarian's office to rule out parasites as cause. Falcor may need to be on medication and may need a few more deworming treatments and a recheck fecal test to help treat him and be sure he is negative for parasites. Be sure to wash your hands well after touching his feces during little box clean up or if he has an accident on the floor. Poor kitty. It is very possible Shunki has a bacterial or parasitic infection. THe first step here is to take her to your vet to get her stools tested. If she has a parasite or bacteria imbalance, it can get treated quickly through your vet in most cases. Until you can get her in to be seen, its best to offer her plenty of water to keep her hydrated and perhaps even mixing 50:50 non-flavored Pedialyte with water to replace her electrolyte losses. You should also give her a probiotic daily such as Fortiflora or even over the counter Culturelle works well. I do hope that Shunki's diarrhea issues resolve soon! Best of luck and take care.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I would recommend rechecking a stool sample. Parasites are not consistent shedders so he may also had a different intestinal parasites that the dewormer didn't cover and may need something else. I would recommend another visit to your veterinarian to have them perform a stool sample. I would also recommend a prescription bland diet. This could be due to the diet and it could also be due to intestinal parasites. I would recommend switching food to a kitten food and see if that helps. If it does not improve and continues to progress, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her poop sample to check for intestinal parasites. I hope this helps! Congratulations on getting Thor! Kittens very commonly have parasites and these will cause diarrhea. A new change in food or bacterial over growth will also cause a loose stool. It also sounds like Thor's rectum is becoming irritated from the diarrhea. Get an appointment with the vet and bring in a stool sample for the doctor check for parasites. Thor will also need a few rounds of vaccines but they will determine if he can have those at the same visit as he is sick with diarrhea. The doctor will prescribe medications to get stop the diarrhea and treat the underlying cause. You can also ask questions about diet recommendations. Best of luck.

He does look very sore and any diarrhoea which lasts more than 2 days in young kittens should be treated as they can rapidly become dehydrated and malnourished if not absorbing food and water sufficiently. I would get a stool sample checked for parasites and also start him on a specialist, highly digestible intestinal diet for 3-5days followed by a good quality kitten food introduced gradually.
