My kitten has diarrhea and gas when pooping. Should I change his diet?

My kitten (mostly notice at night) has really bad diarrhea and gas when he goes poop. She I be changing his diet?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If he vomits again and/or the diarrhea continues, I recommend getting him seen by your vet for an exam and lab work. It may just be a passing episode of gi upset, but if he stops eating or becomes lethargic, get him seen right away as this may indicate some underlying problem.

The blood is concerning, which makes me think maybe he ate something he shouldn't have that might have injured his intestinal tract. The fact that he seems fine otherwise is good news, but I recommend getting him seen by your vet for an exam to be safe.

Situations such as abrupt change in diet such as kittens starting new food, a stressful situation (new environment) may cause a kitten to experience a brief episode of diarrhea. Diarrhea can be transient, short and readily treatable condition. I wouldn’t be too concern as long as he is eating, drinking, behaving normally and no vomiting. I would worm the cat at least twice 2 weeks apart and watch him carefully for the signs above in the next 1-2 days. If diarrhea persist beyond or the kitten stops eating/reduced activity/vomiting start please take him to a vet.

Your kitten probably has colitis, which is an inflammation in the colon. This can be caused by stress, diet or changes in diet, and/or intestinal parasites. I would guess that Zia probably has all of these issues going on. It is not too early to take her to the vet. In fact, I would recommend it. Severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration which can be very serious in a little kitten. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that dietary indiscretion as you pointed out could certainly be a possible reason for Eddie to having diarrhea. You can try to switch to a sensitive stomach type diet like the Science Diet healthy development diet for kitties. If no improvement is noted then I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment as other things are possible like intestinal parasites. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Oreo is having diarrhea. Diarrhea in kittens can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, a virus or another underlying issue. I would recommend Oreo be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her diarrhea, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (dewormer, antidiarrheal, probiotic) that she may need to help resolve it. My kitten has diarrhea and gas. What can I feed him until the vet?

If you have no proof of vaccines it is best to do then to know he is protected. A rabies vaccine would be due along with a panleukopenia and respiratory virus combination (fvrcp). This one will need to be boostered 4 weeks after the first then you can go to every 3 years. You can change his diet to a sensitive stomach or even just boiled shredded chicken to help until you get him seen. You want to pick up a dewormer and probiotic at a pet store to also help

Why does my new 3-month-old kitten have bad gas and stinky poop?

Congratulations on your new kitten Cheez-it! I recommend to have him see the veterinarian who will check him for parasites and may recommend a medication. I would then recommend to try a different diet. I like Royal Canin as it is easy to break down and can often help with pets who are prone to gas and GI upset.
