Why does my kitten still have soft poop after being treated for worms?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | 5 months and 4 days old | 10 lbs

I have a domestic short hair 5 month old kitten, male about 8-10pounds. He had instential worms and has been treated for it that was about 3 weeks ago. He also had antidiareah medications. It’s been a couple weeks since then and he still has soft poop that isn’t completely solid. I’ve added probiotics to his food and give him half gastrointestinal food and normal food. He drinks water and plays with our other cat fine. Let me know if you have any suggestions of what I can do

I would recommend rechecking a stool sample. Parasites are not consistent shedders so he may also had a different intestinal parasites that the dewormer didn't cover and may need something else. I would recommend another visit to your veterinarian to have them perform a stool sample. I would also recommend a prescription bland diet. You are not giving the correct medication. If you are seeing tapeworms, small flat worms or rice like segments near the anus, then you need a prescription dewormer from your veterinarian. I recommend taking a fecal sample in and have them look for parasite eggs under the microscope. Then they can make sure they give you the proper medication. I would recommend repeating de-wormig twice within 2 weeks, this time take her to the vet and use a high quality product. It could also be an intestinal infection or food allergy, the vet will be able to help your kitten in that case as well.

My cat's poop is soft and smelly after deworming. Is this normal?

This can be a normal response to the deworming pill. I recommend giving a bland diet for a couple days such as boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, or low fat cottage cheese. If it continues after a couple days, or he stops eating/drinking, Meow should be seen by a veterinarian in the case he needs medical treatment/care.

If she is eating and drinking and acting normally I would not consider this an emergency. Give it a couple days to see if the stool firms up. Why is my kitten spitting up & has loose gray poop after worm meds?

There are many causes of GI upset. It’s possibly it is related to the dewormer but other causes are also possible and the most common are other types of worms not killed by the medication, coccidia, giardia and bacterial over growth. If your kitten remains sick for longer than 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian. Bring in a stool sample for testing. Young kittens are more fragile than adults so it’s best to play it safe. I hope she starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Kitten still has worms & swollen butt after treatment. What to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This will depend on certain factors. One of them is which deworming medication was given and for which parasite. She could probably receive more deworming if needed at this point. I would recommend that you have Jewel evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My cat has diarrhea. Is a second deworming dose still needed?
