Why does my new kitten have diarrhea, red bum, and bad smell?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 4 days old | 5 lbs

I have had my kitten for under a week now and he has started to have loose bowel movements not liquid just soft in the last 3 days with a bad smell and his bum is red. He goes 4 times a day at the moment before it was once a day. He is acting the same and is eating and drinking. He seems settled. Where I got him from he was just on kitten biscuits. I started to introduce wet food could that be the problem? First time owner and need some advice thanks

Congratulations on getting Thor! Kittens very commonly have parasites and these will cause diarrhea. A new change in food or bacterial over growth will also cause a loose stool. It also sounds like Thor's rectum is becoming irritated from the diarrhea. Get an appointment with the vet and bring in a stool sample for the doctor check for parasites. Thor will also need a few rounds of vaccines but they will determine if he can have those at the same visit as he is sick with diarrhea. The doctor will prescribe medications to get stop the diarrhea and treat the underlying cause. You can also ask questions about diet recommendations. Best of luck.

Moving into a new home is stressful, but it shouldn't cause Thor to have vomiting and diarrhea as well as not eat. That tells me he is sick. If you are feeding him a different diet than what he got previously, that could be the cause of his illness. Try to tempt him to eat with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones), but if he won't eat this or the other symptoms continue, take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

Congrats on your new kitten but I'm sorry Thor isn't doing well! It is concerning that this sore is swollen, which is a sign of infection. He could also have intestinal worms causing his diarrhea. A heavy burden of them can lead a kitten to be more lethargic and not want to eat, as could an infection such as from the sore on his ear. It's serious enough that Thor should see a vet first thing in the morning so his symptoms can be diagnosed and treated.

Why is my new kitten's bum swollen, skinny, and has loose stool?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The bum is a tiny bit swollen, and this could be due to diarrhea. Diarrhea could be due to worms, or food, or other problems. I recommend getting him a good dewormer as well as flea and tick prevention (fleas often carry worm eggs). Also, if Thanos is thin, I recommend a visit to the vet in the morning for a health check. My rescued kitten has loose stool but eats normally. What's wrong?

I would recommend that you take Storm to see a veterinarian. Common causes of diarrhea in a kitten are intestinal parasites like worms, coccidia, or Giardia. You can take a fresh (<12 hours old) stool sample with you so they can test it - called an intestinal parasite screening. If it is not parasites, other causes of diarrhea can be poor nutrition, food allergy, bacterial or viral infection, among a few others.

You did not mention if Busan has been to the veterinarian yet to have his stool checked for parasites. That would be the recommended first step. The doctor may also recommend a round of antibiotics and/or probiotics to try to correct the bacterial flora. A diet trial with a hydrolyzed or novel protein may also be indicated. Rarely liver problems can show up like this so the doctor may also recommend blood work. Sometimes this is a step by step process so be patient. Best of luck with Busan.

He does look very sore and any diarrhoea which lasts more than 2 days in young kittens should be treated as they can rapidly become dehydrated and malnourished if not absorbing food and water sufficiently. I would get a stool sample checked for parasites and also start him on a specialist, highly digestible intestinal diet for 3-5days followed by a good quality kitten food introduced gradually. Probiotics can also be helpful

My kitten has liquid, discolored poop but is still active. Why?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Diarrhea or loose stools can be common in kittens with intestinal parasites. I would recommend running a fecal test at your veterinarian's office to rule out parasites as cause. Falcor may need to be on medication and may need a few more deworming treatments and a recheck fecal test to help treat him and be sure he is negative for parasites. Be sure to wash your hands well after touching his feces during little box clean up or if he has an accident on the floor.
