Why does my kitten have diarrhea? Is it dewormer or feline distemper?

I’m sorry Luna is so sick. It sounds like she needs to see a veterinarian very soon. Young kittens do not have much reserve and can become dehydrated very quickly. Please take a fresh poop sample with you when you go to the veterinarian. They will likely want to look for intestinal parasites and possibly do some blood work to look for panleukopenia. Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes to diarrhea with a red perhaps inflamed anus. Parasites could be the cause or a bacterial or viral infection. I would take your kitten to your veterinarian soon for a fecal test where they will test his stool for parasites and bacteria and/or certain viruses that could be causing the diarrhea. They may Rx a medication to your kitten depending on what the veterinarian discovers on the fecal test. Best of luck! I hope this has helped.

A dewormer would be beneficial if the diarrhea is caused by worms, however if they also have eye discharge or third eyelids showing I would be concerned about other issues ongoing such as a respiratory infection or illness. The kittens, if they are about 2-3 months old, are also of the age where they should be getting their first set of vaccines, exams, etc. It would be best to bring them into your vet for a complete checkup, checking the stool to figure out the cause of the diarrhea, look at the eyes, and get started on a health and vaccination plan.

Congratulations on your new kitten - she is adorable! Alley may have intestinal parasites, which are pretty common in cats living outside. It may have taken about 2 weeks for the symptoms to start as the parasites need to go through their life cycle to start causing problems. The diarrhea may also be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but these are somewhat less likely. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible so that the appropriate treatment can be started. She will also need a good physical exam to make sure that she is otherwise healthy. I recommend that you wash your hands thoroughly with warm soapy water after handling Alley's litter, as some of these parasites can be transmitted to people.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Diarrhea or loose stools can be common in kittens with intestinal parasites. I would recommend running a fecal test at your veterinarian's office to rule out parasites as cause. Falcor may need to be on medication and may need a few more deworming treatments and a recheck fecal test to help treat him and be sure he is negative for parasites. Be sure to wash your hands well after touching his feces during little box clean up or if he has an accident on the floor. Some cats can experience some diarrhea after a worming treatment. However, from what you are describing it sounds like Precious is having a particularly bad reaction to her worming treatment. I would advise contacting the veterinarian who prescribed it, and discussing the issue. They may want to see Precious in for fluid therapy or for monitoring. Common causes for diarrhea and flu-like symptoms in a kitten include intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis (like feline panleukopenia), GI blockage, among others. You can get a pet dewormer and try to slowly syringe water or pedialyte with a little honey in it. Make sure he is swallowing so that the water doesn't go into his lungs. If he has a bacterial infection, he needs to see a vet for antibiotics. If he has panleukopenia, his prognosis is very poor even with veterinary care. Keep him warm and clean and try to get fluids into him.
