My kitten has Coccidia. Can he be around my healthy adult cats?

Coccidia can be treated fairly easy. I would suggest you keep your cat separated from the kitten until the kitten's stool is free of coccidia. If you adopt the kitten while under treatment for coccidia, keep your cat and the kitten separate and give them their own litter box. Hello, coccidia is shed in the feces and rarely in vomit. Wash your hands after cleaning the litter box and clean any surface Oliver may have defecate on. The most common type of Coccidia that infects cats is species specific and it does not affect humans. Some more rare types of coccidia may infect humans such as cryptosporidium and toxoplasma, again also transmitted via a fecal to oral form or by eating raw meat. As long as you are washing your hands thoroughly and not handling fecal matter then you should be safe. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Generally speaking adult cats tend to be less sensitive to G.I. parasites and kittens. Also for many G.I. parasites they have to be passed in the feces and then spend a certain amount of time maturing before they become re-infective. So if you do a good job of cleaning the litter box frequently there's a lower risk of infection to your adult cat. If your adult cat is on a monthly heartworm preventative many of them also include a deworming medication. There are over-the-counter deworming medications you could consider giving to both cats however it's not guaranteed to clear all possible G.I. parasites. you could also discuss with your veterinarian about your inability to get a fecal sample and if they would be willing to just give a broad-spectrum deworming medication to your kitten.

Coccidia is transmitted via the fecal oral route so if there any surfaces that are contaminated with your pup's feces, this should be washed thoroughly and other dogs should be kept away from it. Yes, coccidiosis is indeed a fair possibility. there are also other intestinal parasites that could be the cause as well as viral or bacterial infections. i would recommend to start with a course of treatment for worms and coccidiosis first in order to try and rule that out.

Hello and thank you very much for your question. The coccidiosis treatment that was prescribed to you is generally the most safe and affective on the market. It can be normal to have periods of explosive diarrhea or multiple defecation’s for up to seven days after the treatment starts. My advice is as follows: As long as he continues to eat normally, drink normally, play, and not vomit, I would continue with the treatment without going back to the vet. If he seems lethargic or sick or he just does not seem himself, however, I would take him back to the vet or call the vet as soon as possible to get a consultation. If you decide to keep him at home and continue the treatment, the diarrhea and related side effects of the medications should be gone by 7 to 10 days after the treatment began. Be sure to completely clean all areas where he has had feces or diarrhea. Otis important to clean the environment or reinfection is possible. Most coccidia is not contagious to humans but it can be in cas s if immune compromise or young children. Practice good hygiene and hand washing after handling the puppy should be adequate.
