My puppy has coccidia. Is it contagious to humans? Can he lay on the couch?

Hello, coccidia is shed in the feces and rarely in vomit. Wash your hands after cleaning the litter box and clean any surface Oliver may have defecate on. The most common type of Coccidia that infects cats is species specific and it does not affect humans. Some more rare types of coccidia may infect humans such as cryptosporidium and toxoplasma, again also transmitted via a fecal to oral form or by eating raw meat. As long as you are washing your hands thoroughly and not handling fecal matter then you should be safe. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Coccidia is transmitted via the fecal oral route so if there any surfaces that are contaminated with your pup's feces, this should be washed thoroughly and other dogs should be kept away from it. It seems your first sentence is missing a word in the middle, so I'm not sure what you'd specifically like to let your puppy do. However, it is fine to let Dak continue his normal activities, including socializing and laying around the house. The main precaution when you're treating him for Coccidia is to promptly clean up his stool outside - which is always recommended, but particularly important while a dog is being treated for intestinal parasites, to minimize the risk of contaminating the soil and reinfecting him or another animal. It is recommended to have your veterinarian recheck a fecal sample 2-3 weeks after treating to make sure Dak's coccidia have been cleared. Hope this helps!

Coccidiosis is a common microscopic parasite in puppies. As long as he receives a complete course of treatment and is seen by your vet very soon after adoption for follow-up and wellness and gets started on his vaccinations, I don't see a problem with going ahead with the adoption.

I would recommend deworming him tomorrow and as a precaution, deworming all other pets and humans in the household is rcommended following the introduction of a new pup. Worm eggs need to be ingested in order to be transmitted so hands should be washed after handling the pup (at all times) and especially before eating. I would never recommend allowing a dog to lick people on the face as there is a small risk they may have worm eggs (or bacteria) in and around their mouth which they could transmit to people

Oh no. This is a nuisance to deal with for sure. Tapeworms are contagious to people, but it would require ingesting (eating) a live worm to become infective. As long as you clean up the feces and use good hygiene (washing your hands and avoid putting hands in the mouth after touching your pet or any live worms), then you are less likely to infest yourself. Clean up the poop quickly and don’t let your pet around other dogs or cats to avoid transmission until you can get Coco treated. Best wishes and don’t forget to also get Coco on a good flea preventative (ie Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Vectra etc) at your vet to avoid further infection with tapeworms. Take care.

Hi there. I would expect that all puppies in the litter likely have coccidia, so the pup would need to be seen by a veterinarian for treatment right away. Whether it will survive or not depends on how sick it is at the moment. Coccidia is usually fairly simple to treat, but it sounds like a severe case if two pups have already passed away.
