My cat still scoots her butt on the carpet after deworming. Why?

My cat is scooting her booty on my carpet. She has been dewormed so I don’t know why.

Depending on what was used to deworm Vickie it's still possible that she could have parasites like tapeworms. Vickie might also have an anal gland issue or allergies. If this continues I'd recommend having your vet examine Vickie.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Some causes of her scooting her bottom across the floor could be allergies, irritation, full anal glands or intestinal parasites. I would take Bijou in to your veterinarian and have the anal glands checked to see if they need to be expressed. At this time, I would also advise that you bring a stool sample in with you so your veterinarian can rule out intestinal parasites as a cause. She could be scooting for several reasons. If she has a high worm burden then she may be passing them in her stool as they die off. Her anal gland could be irritating her (not common in such a young kitten), she could have pooo stuck to her rear end, or it could be itchy due to a scrape or injury. The licking could be part of the problem, irritating the delicate tissue of the anus, as well as the fecal material itself causing a small amount of scald if it sits on his skin for very long.. If he has been treated for the diarrhea and parasites, the feces should return to normal soon. If they do not, I recommend getting him rechecked by your vet. In the meantime, make sure his rear stays clean and help him out by wiping him off with a warm moist washcloth when you find him dirty. Putting a little petroleum jelly or A&D ointment on the sore spots will also help him feel better.

Yes, it is possible that Archie has worms and he could need another deworming treatment. When a cat has worms, it takes two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. The first treatment kills the adult present at the time of the treatment, which the second kills the worms that had not yet hatched when the first treatment was given. This scooting could also be caused by impacted anal sacs, and he may need them expressed. I would take Archie into the vet tomorrow for a physical exam, and the vet can express his anal sacs if needed.

My kitten keeps rubbing her butt on the carpet. What should I do?

If she does it one or two times, then it is likely a normal response to some feces or liquid stuck to her bum. However if she is doing this often, then this is a sign of full anal glands or intestinal parasites which cause irritation to the rectum as they exit, in particular tapeworms. My kittens still scoot after deworming. Should they see a vet again?

Great question! When kittens have worms, it typically takes two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. The first kills the adults already present, which the second kills the adults who had not yet hatched from the eggs at the time of the first deworming treatment. I would give you kittens another deworming treatment now, a second two weeks after the first, and then they should be dewormed every three months regularly. If deworming them again doesn't help with the scooting behavior, then I would take them back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps :-)
