My kitten is scooting her butt after deworming. Should I be concerned?

Depending on what was used to deworm Vickie it's still possible that she could have parasites like tapeworms. Vickie might also have an anal gland issue or allergies. If this continues I'd recommend having your vet examine Vickie.

Great question! When kittens have worms, it typically takes two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. The first kills the adults already present, which the second kills the adults who had not yet hatched from the eggs at the time of the first deworming treatment. I would give you kittens another deworming treatment now, a second two weeks after the first, and then they should be dewormed every three months regularly. If deworming them again doesn't help with the scooting behavior, then I would take them back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps :-)

The rectal protrusion may be from her straining to poop after the dewormer. Especially if you find worms in her stool, I recommend being super diligent about handwashing after petting her/cleaning her litterbox as most intestinal parasites in cats can be transmitted to people. If the anal protrusion does not return, then I would have her poop re-checked at the vet’s in 2-3 weeks for intestinal parasites. If it returns, then a prescription steroid/antibiotic ointment applied twice daily for a week or even preparation H cream may help. Good luck!

If she does it one or two times, then it is likely a normal response to some feces or liquid stuck to her bum. However if she is doing this often, then this is a sign of full anal glands or intestinal parasites which cause irritation to the rectum as they exit, in particular tapeworms. Vomiting and regurgitation are sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. The scooting could make worms likely. Given Sasha's young age and the fact that she is otherwise doing fine, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing her diet to something that she can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing her diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have her examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!

I would be more inclined to think that your kitty is obstipated (inability to defecate). As the pet gets backed up there is no where for the ingested food to go, so the cat vomits it back up. Also the stomach will be firm and distended with feces that collect in the colon. Cats that cannot poop for several days will also get full anal glands, this causes irritation of the bum and scooting. Your poor kitty needs to be take to the vet to likely have an enema placed to relieve the impacted feces right away. I would recommend taking kitty in to your local vet by tomorrow at the latest. I would caution against using over the counter enema's because most contain phosphate, and this component is toxic in cats. I would agree that intestinal parasites are still a possibility here, but obstipation would be my first concern. Your vet can easily distinguish which one is the cause of your cats current state by just feeling her belly and doing a rectal exam. I hope your kitty gets better soon!

Yes, I would worry about it in that it's a sign of something medically wrong, such as intestinal worms or anal sac impaction, but it's not serious at all. I would take Talia into the vet with a sample of her feces for the vet to examine tomorrow. The vet can look at her feces under the microscope to diagnose if she does have worms, and can prescribe a deworming treatment for her. The vet can also express her anal sacs.
