My cat is in labor and ate a sac. What was it and is it normal?

This is likely the amniotic sac or a placenta. If Iris has been having strong contractions without producing a kitten, she needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Never pull on anything that is hanging out of her since you don't know exactly what it is. Occasionally they can prolapse part of their uterus and if you pull on it you will make it drastically worse. It's the amnionic sac, inside of it there is most likely a kitten, this is the very last stage of labor and the kittens should come out within a couple hours tops, if it takes longer you need to take her to the vet urgently.

I would nor be concerned at this stage. Multiple placemats can be expelled at the same time and this is what you may have seen. As long as she is able to nurse the kittens and is eating and drinking well, I would just monitor for now. If she becomes lethargic or inappetant then I would get her checked by a vet. You can have an ultrasound performed to ensure everything is ok. If you notice excessive bleeding all of a sudden, I would get her seen as soon as possible. I hope this helps! once you see the sack it should not take more than 2 hours for the first kitten to come out, anything above that and there is probably a problem (not common in cats) and Sasha will need to be taken to the vet.

Hello. There may not be any problems. This might be the placenta from one of the first kittens, or the beginning of the 3rd birth. As long as she seems content & is caring for the newborns, I would just give her more time. If the sack has not passed by tomorrow, try to have Diora seen by your vet tomorrow. Miscarriage and dystocia are possible in this case and an immediate veterinary check up would be needed to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. C section may be needed. It depends on how close to labor she is. Some pets may not stop eating until right before actual labor, while some may stop eating and lose appetite about a day or so before. Making sure she has a nest box to have her babies and keeping an eye on her for additional signs of labor such as visible contractions and pushing is best. If she continues to have discharge without going into labor, or is in labor for several hours without producing a kitten, seeking veterinary care ASAP is best to make sure there isn't an underlying problem or stuck kitten.
