My cat has sudden kidney inflammation and isn't peeing. What's wrong?

Hello. In your post, you indicated that your cannot cannot pee. This is a life threatening emergency and he should be taken to the closest hospital or emergency clinic. If he has an obstruction, this needs to be taken care of immediately. In addition to it being very painful, it causes kidney failure and he can die if this is not corrected immediately. His urine should be looked at microscopically to determine if he has an infection or crystals or possibly a small stone. He will require a catheterization while sedated to relieve the blockage. He will probably need fluids and may require hospitalization. While the antibiotics you have listed are all potentially good for a uti, we are legally not permitted to prescribe or recommend a dose without an examination. Thanks for posting this question. I am really worried about Kent too. Urinary obstruction can be very serious and even fatal. If he was obstructed fir a long enough time it may have damaged his kidneys which may be why he isn't eating. It also looks by the picture that maybe he is leaking urine? That is very concerning too. I worry his urethra may be damaged. I would encourage you to reach out to your veterinarian and take him back in for a recheck and possible blood work. His condition is very serious and could potentially be fatal. I'm so sorry Kent is so sick. I wish him the best.

Besides a blockage, it could be a ruptured urinary bladder or acute kidney failure. Both of these would also cause socks to have other signs of illness (i.e. vomiting and lethargy). Other than that, the only other possibilities are severe dehydration, or an avulsion of the ureters. Again, these would be expected to cause other signs of illness. Your cat may have a blockage, nerve damage, or acute kidney failure. It's not possible to know without being able to evaluate her and running some diagnostics. Persistent vomiting and anorexia are signs of significant illness in cats, either from fever, infection or inflammation. Urinary obstruction leads to dangerous toxin build up and potential kidney injury and hospital treatment is necessary immediately and may include intravenous fluids and medications. Occasionally kidney damage can be irreversible

Given that Minx is a young male cat and having abnormal urinations and likely blood in his urine, I suspect that he may be suffering from Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), or inflammation in the lower urinary tract. This is causing him difficulty urinating, and painful urination. I recommend having him seen by a veterinarian right away, before he becomes fully "blocked", meaning unable to pass any urine at all. This is a life-threatening emergency, and requires rapid veterinary attention. Your veterinarian will perform a physical exam and likely recommend bloodwork to evaluate the severity of his urinary tract disease. FIC is a treatable condition, but again, if he becomes unable to pass any urine at all, he can experience acute kidney failure and develop fatal heart rhythms. I hope this is helpful!

Have Moose examined tonight by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. A cat that is not urinating or is unable to urinate should be considered a veterinary emergency. An exam and testing may diagnose another urinary tract infection or a urinary obstruction. Blood work can be submitted to assess major organ function, especially kidney function. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis.
