My cat has bladder stones, isn't eating, and pees pink. What's wrong?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kent. I am sorry to hear that he is still not eating after his surgery. Is his pain well controlled? Being painful after surgery is a big reason why a cat will refuse food. Perhaps ask your veterinarian to prescribe an additional pain medication. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to cats. Also make sure his incision site is clean and there is no pain, redness, discharge or swelling that could possibly indicate an infection. I hope this information helps!

Poor kitty. Cats can have blood in their urine as a result of stress, bladder stones or even an underlying urinary tract infection. As long as he is urinating readily with no excessive straining, vocalization, or lethargy, he shouldn't be in any immediate danger. I would recommend taking him in to your vet within the next day or two to have a urinalysis done so that he can ge properly diagnosed and treated. Until then, continue to monitor him for any of the symptoms that I mentioned above, which would warrant an emergency visit to the vet. Otherwise, a regular vet visit is appropriate. Poor Kitty Kins. It sounds like he has either lower urinary tract disease, stones or has a partial urinary blockage. None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You are doing the right thing by feeding him canned food, as this will increase his water intake and help promote a healthy bladder. However if he does become completely blocked (blocked Tom), he will need emergency procedures to free up the blockage and empty his bladder, as they mentioned already. I totally understand not being able to do the procedure the first time around due to cost. Unfortunately this cost is pretty standard for these types of things. When cats are blocked for a long time they can have elevated kidney and potassium values that with IV fluids and relieving the obstruction the elevations usually return to normal MOST of the time. Was blood work done when he was hospitalized? I would have him rechecked and blood work ran since it has been 2 days with out eating. Cats shouldn't go longer than that as they can get a secondary liver problem from not eating. If you changed his diet to a prescription urinary diet consider going back to his old food until he is eating and urinating well then trying the prescription food again. I would recommend a further check up and blood test as renal issues can come up many hours/days later than initial presentation. Incontinence can be secondary to lack of bladder contraction due to over-distended bladder (due to blockage), there are anyway medications available to help contraction. I'm so sorry but the x-rays are too grainy and blurry when we try to enlarge them. We cannot tell anything from these. Can you please post again with clearer photos? Also, the positioning of your cat in the x-rays is not good. The back legs need to pulled completely backwards so we can see the entire urethra. I agree with your vet and just based on the clinical signs I would say a urethra partial obstruction is likely (crystals or a stone). I would suggest the following: 1. Blood testing to check kidney function 2. Urine test to look for crystals, infection, etc. 3. Sandy should be sedated and a urethral catheter passed. Often times if there are crystals and/or a small stone blocking the urethra they can be flushed backwards into the bladder. Then a special diet can be prescribed to help dissolve the crystals/stones.

It sounds that Puss suffers from acute kidney failure, which is most commonly caused by intoxication (for example ingesting antifreeze, human anti-inflammatory medications, lily pollen and more). This is a serious condition and the best place to be for Puss is a vet hospital. There are a few methods to induce urine output (drip, diuretic medications) and I do hope he will start producing urine very soon. However, as I am sure your vet advised you, the prognosis are uncertain, if Puss is not able to produce any urine at the moment.
