My cat got a corneal ulcer after surgery. Can ketamine cause this?

Hello and thank your for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Superficial corneal ulcers are treated with antibiotics eye drops and oral pain killers. These medications are prescription-only, so you need to take your kitten to your local vets to get them.

By far the most common cause of corneal ulcers is herpesvirus; so although antibiotic drops are usually indicated to treat secondary bacterial infections or prevent infection, Kit might not be improving because she has viral eye disease. Some vets will try oral antiviral medication or topical antiviral drops. Herpesvirus can be very difficult to treat and it never goes away completely. You may want to ask about referral to an ophthalmologist for the best treatment.

I would need to see a clear picture of the eye to give you my opinion regarding this specific case, in some cases surgery is not absolutely necessary and cats can live just fine with the little permanent damage on the cornea, in other cases the damage is extensive and surgery is highly recommended.

Poor Keanu! If he is still squinting then it is likely still bothering him and not completely healed. I would let your vet know. Your vet will likely want to see him again and make sure there isn't a small ulcer left or an eyelash or other issue causing his discomfort. If left untreated, the eye could get worse really quickly. In this case a picture of the area would be essential to determine the underlying cause. Persistent corneal ulcers due to infections, corneal sequestrum and corneal scars and many others are all possible. Please repost your question and attach a pic to it.

I do recommend a follow up but if she is no longer squinting and the cornea is clear, not cloudy, and the conjunctiva is not red or swollen then you are fine to finish the medication as directed and monitor her at home for problems. I have not heard of a dog with a corneal ulcer being lethargic, weak or having their legs give out. I'm not sure what medications she is on but it could be a reaction to one of the medications. I suggest you call your vet for advice since they have her full medical history.
