My cat's eye has black pigment after ulcer. Should I do surgery?

It depends if the dead eye continues to suffer from an active infection, if it does it is advised to have the eye removed, if the eye is not painful and doesn't have an active infection most of the time then the eye does not have to be removed.

I do recommend a follow up but if she is no longer squinting and the cornea is clear, not cloudy, and the conjunctiva is not red or swollen then you are fine to finish the medication as directed and monitor her at home for problems. This looks like a corneal ulcer. I would have this checked. He may already be blind in that eye but this can be painful and can become infected. They will stain the eye to see if it’s an ulcer and give Titan medication to heal the cornea. If the eye is chronically painful then you may want to consider removing the eye if he’s blind in that eye. They should be able to tell if he can see anything during their exam. In this case a picture of the area would be essential to determine the underlying cause. Persistent corneal ulcers due to infections, corneal sequestrum and corneal scars and many others are all possible. Please repost your question and attach a pic to it.

Hello. I am sorry to see that John is having issues with his eye. It does appear that the eye is severely compromised, and if the white clear discharge seen is the material from inside his eye then yes, it needs to be removed. You can always see an ophthalmologist for their opinion, however if that discharge is from a ruptured globe there is likely very little they will do aside from remove the eye. If the discharge can be 'wiped away' and a normal eye is underneath (unlikely based on what your vet has said and the picture provided) then it could be saved, however this is unlikely. Good luck with John, and remember, animals with 1 eye do exceptionally well, so don't worry about John only having 1 eye, he will do great!

That is very high pressure in that eye, and if the staining of the cornea showed a "yellow" streak, this suggests an ulcer. Cats are really good at hiding pain, so I think it is difficult to assume that he is not painful. With these findings, I would tend to agree with your veterinarian, that the eye should be removed for the long term comfort of Alex. With the damage to the eye, and the ulcer, it may become more painful over time, or even rupture. If he can't see, he won't miss the eye once it is gone. I have not heard of Ketamine causing any corneal ulcerations. Either your cat had that ulcer prior (likely from the cat fight) but only starting showing symptoms after the surgery or the eye got dried out during the anesthesia to fix the back leg. Either way, the eye needs to be treated so if you don't have medication already please call your vet.
