My dog has a corneal ulcer. Are lethargy and falling normal symptoms?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zeus. I would recommend having some bloodwork checked on him. Rarely, severe kidney disease can cause ulcers in the mouth. If this is not the case, he could be reluctant to move due to joint, muscle or abdominal pain. Unfortunately, his signs seen more complex than when he was originally evaluated so it is worth having seen again. Good luck!

No, it's not common to see any appetite changes with a corneal ulcer. If Mylie is on any oral medications for her eye problem, it's possible that they may be upsetting her stomach. If not, I would be concerned that she may have a separate problem causing her to not eat or drink. Either way, I would recommend calling your veterinarian or taking her back in for a recheck. She may need lab work or other testing to help determine why she isn't eating or drinking, so she can get started on appropriate treatment.

She may be lethargic due to pain. I suggest you call your vet to see if you can get a different pain medication. I have eye problems and I can tell you it is miserable and very painful and you don't feel like doing much. I'm guessing that may be going on with her. I'm glad the eye is looking better though!

I recommend continuing with the medications. It can take several days to see the full effect. You can try applying artificial tears throughout the day in addition to those medications to help. If Chance's eyes become cloudy, red, has any discharge then have your veterinarian take a look as those can be signs of an ulcer.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Yes, what Susan is experiencing is called Anisocoria; one pupil is larger than the other. Sometimes this can occur due to an injury to the cornea (she currently has), injury to the nerves of the eyes, or brain injury. It can also be caused by glaucoma of the eye, or severe inflammation of the interior portion of the eye. I would recommend Susan see her veterinarian again vet very soon to check for any other underlying conditions besides the corneal ulcer that may have caused or contributed to the anisocoria. Yes, if he is reluctant to or struggling to open the eye, I would be very concerned that he may have a scratch or lesion on his cornea. His eye should be examined by a veterinarian to determine if that is a possibility. If so, he would require prescription eye medication. As far as we know dogs do not suffer from withdrawal symptoms from pain killers, however it sounds like your dog is still in pain. Shaking, hiding, panting and not eating are cardinal signs of pain and therefore I suggest you take Cooper back to the vet for a re-exam. Eye injuries as well as ulcers and also glaucoma are very painful and he will need more pain medicine and the eye needs to be re-examined.
