Why won't my cat's eye ulcer heal after 3 years of treatment?

If there was no ulcer present, it's possible that the corneal edema is related to infection or glaucoma. There are a few inherited diseases that can cause corneal edema as well. If the current treatment is no longer helping you should recheck with your veterinarian. You may also want to ask about referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist who might be able to better determine what is causing the edema.

By far the most common cause of corneal ulcers is herpesvirus; so although antibiotic drops are usually indicated to treat secondary bacterial infections or prevent infection, Kit might not be improving because she has viral eye disease. Some vets will try oral antiviral medication or topical antiviral drops. Herpesvirus can be very difficult to treat and it never goes away completely. You may want to ask about referral to an ophthalmologist for the best treatment.

Poor Keanu! If he is still squinting then it is likely still bothering him and not completely healed. I would let your vet know. Your vet will likely want to see him again and make sure there isn't a small ulcer left or an eyelash or other issue causing his discomfort. If left untreated, the eye could get worse really quickly. This lesion seem to be due to a chronic irritation of the cornea, an active corneal ulceration seem not to be present, but only a fluorescein test at your local veterinarian can confirm it (=rule out further corneal damage). The eye looks fairly comfortable anyway. I suspect the conjunctivitis is due to a viral type of infection/inflammation (herpesvirus can be involved). Hello and thank your for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Superficial corneal ulcers are treated with antibiotics eye drops and oral pain killers. These medications are prescription-only, so you need to take your kitten to your local vets to get them.

From the pictures you have posted, it looks like handsome Simba could be suffering with keratitis which might be secondary to the presence of the ulcer. He might need to have other antinflammatory drops into the eye. It is best to wait for your appt on Sat and see when the eye is stained with fluorescin if the ulcer has gone completely and take it from there. Good luck !

Steroid treatment can cause worsening of the eye ulcer and are usually not used in these cases. Some pics of the eye and more detailed informations of the problem are needed to be able to give you specific answers.
