My cat has diarrhea after Convenia. Is it a side effect? What food?

Most antibiotics can potentially cause diarrhea but if Misty had a skin infection she needed antibiotics to improve. Ask your vet if a probiotic could help. Convenia and antibiotics in the same class have been reported to cause immune system diseases, but there is no specific life threatening complication of Convenia that I am aware of. If the articles you read did not cite specific research I would not be too concerned - people often blame medications for problems that are actually unrelated, and anyone can publish an article online hat makes claims that are not backed by research.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butter. Unfortunately, diarrhea can have many causes. Convenia is the most likely cause, but anesthesia could cause it as well as the stress of her visit or an underlying medical condition. If there is blood in the stool or she is acting sick, then she will need to see a veterinarian today. This doesn't sound like the case based on your post though. Otherwise, I recommend that she sees her veterinarian tomorrow. It is easy for her to become dehydrated from the ongoing fluid loss in the stool. The veterinarian will examine her and determine how best to treat her and resolve the diarrhea. For example, subcutaneous fluids, probiotics and possibly antibiotic may be warranted. Hello. If the diarrhea is slowing down, then it may just resolve on its own. It sounds like your cat received the long acting antibiotic called Covenia, & the most common side effect is diarrhea. I would start Ella on a probiotic such as Proviable or FortiFlora, both available at major pet retailers like Petco. I am less inclined to think this is IBD because IBD diarrhea is often accompanied by vomiting, too. I would be careful about using this drug in Ella again, but give things some time to see if the diarrhea quits with the addition of a probiotic. Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

Poor guy. It sounds like your little guy is having an adverse reaction to the medication. He needs to be seen for a rechk by your vet right away to have the diarrhea addressed and then to get him on an alternate medication that will hopefully agree with his system more. There are other medications that are a bit safer for cats that your vet can hopefully prescribe for him, depending on the type of infection he has. Until you can get him in to be seen its best to start some probiotics. You can start over the counter Culturelle and this can help restore some of his natural GI flora and can help some with the diarrhea as well until you can get him in to your vet. Hello and thank you for your post! The bacterial overgrowth was not very high, which is good. If the stool is not improving or got better and is getting worse off of antibiotics, I would consider going through a second round of antibiotics (with a potentially different antibiotic) and for a longer period of time. Some antibiotics that I use for the intestinal overgrowth is Metronidazole and Tylosin. These antibiotics I've had quite a good track record of getting these diarrhea cases to resolve. Another possibility is that the food (C/D) may be causing the soft smelly stool. You might consider switching to Royal Canin SO as an alternative option. I am so sorry your cat has been having diarrhea! I would contact your veterinarian since your cat just had anesthesia for his dental procedure. Sometimes anesthesia can cause GI upset. Also, it sounds like you just changed the food. Did you do a slow transition of food? A quick transition of food can cause GI upset as well. I would recommend starting a probiotic and also contacting your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may be able to help you by sending home a medication, like metronidazole, for the diarrhea.
