My cat has diarrhea after antibiotic shot. Is it IBD or a side effect?

My cat went to vet 7/11 for stitches. She got her stitches because she had a cut from a broken fence outside and she got all her shots plus a antibiotic shot. 7/13 diarrhea started its slowing down but my vet told me it could be from the antibiotic shot she got but, now I’m curios if she may have IBD because the diarrhea and going outside litter box by accident I think a couple times and she’s still having the diarrhea. She’s eating great and drinking good stitching are great also. What can I do

Hello. If the diarrhea is slowing down, then it may just resolve on its own. It sounds like your cat received the long acting antibiotic called Covenia, & the most common side effect is diarrhea. I would start Ella on a probiotic such as Proviable or FortiFlora, both available at major pet retailers like Petco. I am less inclined to think this is IBD because IBD diarrhea is often accompanied by vomiting, too. I would be careful about using this drug in Ella again, but give things some time to see if the diarrhea quits with the addition of a probiotic. Hi, it is best to understand better what is causing Dora to feel poorly. Has she had any weight loss ? Has she suffered with diarrhoea for a while ? I would recommend to have a feacal exam and an ultrasound for her abdomen which should not require a sedation. You can keep her on applaws which is a very easy to digest food and will help the diarrhoea and in terms of antibiotics metronidazole would be more indicated for bacteria affecting the gi tract.. but it does not come in an injection form, you would need to give her tablets on a daily basis.Hope this helps !

My cat had Convenia shot. Is her diarrhea and not eating serious?

Most antibiotics can potentially cause diarrhea but if Misty had a skin infection she needed antibiotics to improve. Ask your vet if a probiotic could help. Convenia and antibiotics in the same class have been reported to cause immune system diseases, but there is no specific life threatening complication of Convenia that I am aware of. If the articles you read did not cite specific research I would not be too concerned - people often blame medications for problems that are actually unrelated, and anyone can publish an article online hat makes claims that are not backed by research.

Why does my cat still have liquid diarrhea after antibiotics?

Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

My IBD cat is vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. Is she okay?

This probably just means that her IBD is no longer being controlled on the current medications and she just needs further management of her condition. I highly recommend that you have reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. At the very least they can make sure to treat her symptoms so that you can get her to feel better. They can also add medications to try to get her condition under control again. Good luck!

My cat has bloody diarrhea after antibiotics. Is it from irritation?

It is very possible the blood is from the irritated colon. The colon gets irritated secondary to the diarrhea. You can try an over the counter probiotic to help good bacteria return to the colon and help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea does not resolve he needs to see a vet for possible stronger medications.

If your kitty will eat her food when you add benefiber, it likely will help. The diarrhea could be a side effect of the antibiotic, so you may want to check with your vet about whether the antibiotic should be stopped or changed or the course finished anyway.

My senior cat has diarrhea from Chlorambucil. What can I give?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would get a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If the metronidazole isn't working I would ask for tylan and Hill's i/d to help control the diarrhea. The drug can cause GI upset seen as vomiting and diarrhea. You can discuss trying a lower dose with your Vet when they call you back. Lowering the dose will make it less effective against the lymphoma. I wish you the best!
