My cat has diarrhea after new dental products. What can I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butter. Unfortunately, diarrhea can have many causes. Convenia is the most likely cause, but anesthesia could cause it as well as the stress of her visit or an underlying medical condition. If there is blood in the stool or she is acting sick, then she will need to see a veterinarian today. This doesn't sound like the case based on your post though. Otherwise, I recommend that she sees her veterinarian tomorrow. It is easy for her to become dehydrated from the ongoing fluid loss in the stool. The veterinarian will examine her and determine how best to treat her and resolve the diarrhea. For example, subcutaneous fluids, probiotics and possibly antibiotic may be warranted. You can try home made diet and probiotics for a week. GI distress from new food or treats generally only lasts a few days. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, or he becomes uninterested in food, I'd recommend taking him to see his vet for a physical exam.

Causes of diarrhea in cats are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, diet changes, new foods or treats or food allergies and intolerances, metabolic conditions like hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis, and stress can sometimes be the cause. I would stop all wet food or at least the new wet food. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours. You can start a probiotic, I like Purina fortiflora which you can find online. If the diarrhea persists he would need to see a Vet to have medications prescribed. I hope this helps and I wish Toffee a speedy recovery!

Congrats on your new cat, but I'm sorry Hana isn't doing well! It is concerning that she is experiencing both vomiting and diarrhea, and it could be caused by a change in diet, intestinal worms, a GI illness, or a foreign body among other things. The Drontal can also cause some GI upset as well. I do think it's a good idea that Hana is seen by a vet since she is experiencing both vomiting and diarrhea, and I would see if your vet can see her tomorrow along with your other cat. Hold off on the cat probiotics for now since she is vomiting, and talk to the vet to see if they feel they will be helpful to her. I would withhold food for tonight, she can have water, and then give her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts in the morning to see if she can keep that down. It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I hope this helps!

It is a bit concerning that he's really not eating enough, and if he's had diarrhea for a few weeks, that would make him feel pretty awful and lead to a decrease in appetite. Given that the Metronidazole didn't fix the diarrhea and he's having a decrease in appetite, I think taking him into the vet again would be best. I'd have him seen today or tomorrow. I would not be overly worried about her not producing stools just yet. The metronidazole and the buprenorphine can both cause a decrease in gastric motility but moreso the buprenorphine. If she is still on the buprenorphine I would discontinue it unless you feel like she is still in a lot of pain. If she will eat it, you can offer her some canned pumpkin as that may help stimulate her GI tract. Pure canned pumpkin, not pie filling. About one teaspoon 2-3 times per day. I would also recommend you start her on a probiotic - one made for cats, not humans. I like this one but any one made for cats is fine.
