My cat has diarrhea after dental surgery. Is it Convenia or anesthesia?

Most antibiotics can potentially cause diarrhea but if Misty had a skin infection she needed antibiotics to improve. Ask your vet if a probiotic could help. Convenia and antibiotics in the same class have been reported to cause immune system diseases, but there is no specific life threatening complication of Convenia that I am aware of. If the articles you read did not cite specific research I would not be too concerned - people often blame medications for problems that are actually unrelated, and anyone can publish an article online hat makes claims that are not backed by research.

I am so sorry your cat has been having diarrhea! I would contact your veterinarian since your cat just had anesthesia for his dental procedure. Sometimes anesthesia can cause GI upset. Also, it sounds like you just changed the food. Did you do a slow transition of food? A quick transition of food can cause GI upset as well. I would recommend starting a probiotic and also contacting your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may be able to help you by sending home a medication, like metronidazole, for the diarrhea. Hi, it is best to understand better what is causing Dora to feel poorly. Has she had any weight loss ? Has she suffered with diarrhoea for a while ? I would recommend to have a feacal exam and an ultrasound for her abdomen which should not require a sedation. You can keep her on applaws which is a very easy to digest food and will help the diarrhoea and in terms of antibiotics metronidazole would be more indicated for bacteria affecting the gi tract.. but it does not come in an injection form, you would need to give her tablets on a daily basis.Hope this helps !

The incision is holding together. Yes, typically the stitches are not pulled tight at the time of surgery to allow for the skin swelling that naturally occurs after the surgery. As for the diarrhea, it could be due to stress or any medications Ella was given after surgery. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about your recent troubles with Nora's health. I have certainly heard of lots of different side effects long term from any sort of anesthetic procedure, the most common actually being changes to behavior. I have definitely also heard of animals that have come blind or deaf from anesthetic (though usually it is temporarily) episodes. While I can not say for sure what has happened in this case, I would definitely want to completely rule out the possibility of a coincidence first since we are dealing with such an elderly patient. I imagine that with an older patient, preoperative blood work was obtained and analyzed prior to placing her under anesthesia. If this was completely normal, I would definitely recommend having some x-rays and ultrasound imagine procured to rule out the presence of any sort of malignant process or signs of organ failure. If you are able to do this with at least a relative amount of certainty, this still doesn't resolve the issue. I would considering adding more fiber to the diet and a probiotic to see if this helps solidify the fecal material while investigating the cause. I don't want to sound grim, but at nearly 16 years of age there are a number of sinister things within the body that could be responsible for Nora's diarrhea unfortunately. The anesthetic event could have certainly compromised the immune system in such a way to make her susceptible to something that may have been lying in wait or brewing slowly. It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-nausea medicine to help with the vomiting. I hope this helps!

Once her appetite is back to normal, she should have a bowel movement within a day or two. Encourage her to drink plenty of water as this will soften the stool.
