My cat is eating chocolate protein shake. Why is it bad for them?

Hello. I would not be too worried about the milk chocolate in the Nesquik, we may actually have more issues with the sugar free part. If this product contains xylitol, this can cause Batset's blood sugar to drop pretty low. Look on the ingredients & if you see xylitol listed, I would give her some food & she should be just fine. It is very unlikely that it would cause any concern as the percent of cocoa in the whipped cream is likely very small, and ingesting a small volume, would result in a small amount of cocoa consumed. I recommend that you monitor, any vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures or hyperactivity bring them to a vet right away. Best of luck with Zoe and Wilshire!

The problem with chocolate milk is that it contains both chocolate and milk. Chocolate is toxic to cats, and milk causes GI upset because cats are lactose intolerant. Cali likely will be ok if she drank a very small amount, but you could see some vomiting and/or diarrhea. If you do see that, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

Rarely will cats eat enough chocolate to become toxic. Milk chocolate with the Rice Krispies should be ok. It’s the dark baking chocolate that is the most toxic and cats are quite fussy, unlike dogs, and they won’t eat as much. Keep an eye on him. Signs of toxicity starts with agitation. If he should start acting abnormally excited then you may want to have him checked at your emergency clinic. Do not try to have him vomit as that may cause more medical issues than the chocolate. While it doesn’t sound like there would be anything toxic in a coconut milk and vanilla protein shake, I also wouldn’t think it would be good for him. If Lucky is otherwise healthy with no underlying medical problems it is probably okay to have a lick or two. If there are other ingredients you may want to post a picture of the label - things like caffeine can sometimes be in these shakes and could be toxic if enough is ingested.

That was naughty of Nyx to eat the ice cream! I would first check the ingredients of the ice cream. If it doesn't contain a large amount of real chocolate or dark chocolate (as opposed to milk chocolate), there may not be enough chocolate in the ice cream to cause problems. If it does contain large amounts of chocolate or dark chocolate, rush her into a vet immediately. I would monitor her for signs of chocolate toxicity to be safe which include rapid and/or labored breathing, hyperactivity, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and general symptoms of illness like decreased appetite and/or lethargy.
