My cat is giving birth. What are the dos and don'ts for kittens?

The good news is that most mother cats are very good mothers, and we generally don't have to do much to help them. I am attaching a link to a handout on orphan kittens in case you need it, but the most important thing is to make sure that they have a safe, warm and quiet place for Taiga to take care of them. Hello. Make sure your Momma cat has a quiet, safe & secure area to have her kittens, away from noise, other pets, & weather. You can begin feeding her a good kitten food ( dry or canned ) and continue the kitten food up until the kittens are weaned . This will give her extra calories to maintain her pregnancy & provide plenty of rich milk for her kittens. She will probably not leave her babies for the first couple of days, so make sure her litter box, food & water are close by. Congrats on Rihana having kittens! The good news is that cats typically do not need help giving birth to kittens, and I would leave her alone to give birth. Too much interference from a human can cause stress in the mother, and it is recommended not to intervene unless the cat is having problems giving birth. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't allow the other cats in the room during labor. Despite them all getting along under normal circumstances doesn't mean their presence during labor won't stress Lovely. When cats are stressed during labor they can delay delivery of the kittens. She should be in a quiet room that is familiar to her. The number of people should be limited. With one person checking on her every few hours. As for after the kittens are born I wouldn't allow the other cats in the room without you. Again just because they get along doesn't mean that one of the cats won't hurt the kittens. Hello. There are 3 stages of labor in the cat. First stage: The cervix dilates & uterine contractions begin. The queen may become restless, exhibit excessive grooming, purr, scratch the nesting box/area, & pace during this stage. At the end of the first stage, the queen will settle into her nesting box/area. The first stage can last from a few hours up to 24 hours. Stage two: Delivery of the kittens. Strong abdominal contractions are visible & the first litten is usually delivered within 60 minutes of seeing the contractions. Kittens are usually delivered every 30-60 minutes, but delivery can last 16-18 hours. Third stage: Delivery of the fetal membranes although this may happen concurrently with second stage labor.
