My cat is pregnant. What are the risks and how can I best help?

Hello. Make sure your Momma cat has a quiet, safe & secure area to have her kittens, away from noise, other pets, & weather. You can begin feeding her a good kitten food ( dry or canned ) and continue the kitten food up until the kittens are weaned . This will give her extra calories to maintain her pregnancy & provide plenty of rich milk for her kittens. She will probably not leave her babies for the first couple of days, so make sure her litter box, food & water are close by. Congrats on Rihana having kittens! The good news is that cats typically do not need help giving birth to kittens, and I would leave her alone to give birth. Too much interference from a human can cause stress in the mother, and it is recommended not to intervene unless the cat is having problems giving birth. The best tip i can give you for her health is to feed her wet and dry kitten food during the pregnancy and as long as she is nursing the kittens, other then that she will take care of all the rest. just make sure you have a quite place where she can feel safe to give birth.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, it isn't dangerous for a cat to be pregnant that young. Nature is different then people. If she was mature enough to come in to heat she should be fine. When the kittens are weaned at 6-8 weeks I would have her spayed though to prevent further pregnancies and to control the cat population. Good luck!

She needs food, water and a litter box or a place to go to the bathroom for basic care. As far as giving birth goes, provide her a comfortable resting place. Motherly instincts will kick in when it is time and she will take care of the babies for you. If she has a problem delivering them, then you will need to call a vet or find a shelter than can help you with her care. Birth is messy so make sure you have towels and blankets to change out so they stay clean and dry.
