Is breeding a small runt cat safe? What are the risks of pregnancy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 6.3 lbs

Hello, I have a very small (6.3 lb) almost 3 year old female cat. She was the runt of the litter, and adorable. I never fixed her as I wanted her to have kitties once first, but I'm wondering if she would even be able to survive pregnancy given her size?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Runts of the litter should not be bred as they are much more likely to have complications including dystocia, milk fever, etc. I would recommend not breeding her, and would actually recommend getting her spayed right away to prevent an un-planned pregnancy that would put Katya in danger. Best of luck with Katya.
