Is breeding a small runt cat safe? What are the risks of pregnancy?

Hello, and thanks for your question. I would VERY strongly discourage you from breeding Samra. It sounds like she has some lasting orthopedic problems from her young injury, and she may have injured her pelvis. Not only could her ability to give birth be affected if she had a pelvic injury, but if she has lasting orthopedic problems, the weight gain and joint laxity that pregnancy will cause will likely cause her pain and may even cause further damage. It would be best to spay Samra to avoid a pregnancy. Hope this helps!

Cat should not be bred until they've reached full maturity - sometime between 18 months and 2 years of age. I would recommend that the two cats are of similar sizes as using a much larger male can result in kittens that are too large causing problems at birth. You should also have both cats examined by a veterinarian prior to breeding to ensure that they are both healthy and have a no apparent hereditary conditions that could be passed on to the kittens. Please also keep in mind that pregnancy and delivery can result in some complications sometimes even needing surgery and you should be prepared for these expenses.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Personally I think she is getting very close to being too old. I would have an exam and bloodwork done by your Vet. If everything comes back fine then you can try. I wouldn’t breed her 10 or older and would spay her as soon as you are done. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she hasn't been spayed yet she should be able to still have kittens. Her breed is only a problem if she or the male cat has large skulls that they may not pass in the birth canal. It is not too early to spay her, in fact I usually recommend spaying at 6months. The more heat cycles so goes through the more at risk she is for mammary and uterine cancers as she ages. My recommendation is to spay her soon. Good luck and kisses to Sussie!

The best thing you can do is to weigh her twice daily to make sure she's growing appropriately. Kittens should gain 10% of their birth weight per week, or if you don't know the birth weight you should make sure the kitten is gaining weight each day and not losing weight. If she is not gaining weight it would be a good idea to see a vet for an exam and potentially to supplement with bottle feeding.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, it isn't dangerous for a cat to be pregnant that young. Nature is different then people. If she was mature enough to come in to heat she should be fine. When the kittens are weaned at 6-8 weeks I would have her spayed though to prevent further pregnancies and to control the cat population. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should NOT allow a male kitten to breed with his mother. This will perpetuate underlying genetic conditions, and Siamese cats already have enough genetic problems. I would recommend having either the mother spayed, the son neutered, or just get them both desexed. Best of luck with your little ones!
