What food is best for my 7-month-old kitten with gas and loose stool?

Congratulations on your new kitten Cheez-it! I recommend to have him see the veterinarian who will check him for parasites and may recommend a medication. I would then recommend to try a different diet. I like Royal Canin as it is easy to break down and can often help with pets who are prone to gas and GI upset. It's possible there could be something underlying such as a food allergy (protein sources can cause allergies in some pets!), or even something such as parasites or an infection causing excess gas. It would be a good idea to bring in a fecal sample to your vet to check for the most common causes of GI upset, and if nothing is found consider a food trial with your vet to rule out any possible food allergies that could be contributing.

Poor Rodney! You may want to try a probiotic mixed into his food once a day, such as Forti-Flora - this often helps with excessive gas. Another option would be to try a different food, as there may be an ingredient in his current diet that doesn't agree with him - there are companies like Natural Balance and Wellness that make limited ingredient diets that may be a better fit for him. If these things don't help, then it would be a good idea to have him checked by a vet to make sure that nothing else is wrong. Your vet may also recommend a prescription GI diet, or a hypoallergenic diet to see if this is more effective.

Poor guy. I wouldn't decrease his food for fear of malnutrition, but you should try feeding him an easily digestible bland diet until his GI flora is back to normal. Excessive gas is an indication of indigestion. Try Purina EN or have your vet prescribe Royal Canin GI low fat or Hill's Science Diet. An easily digestible food should help both the stool and the gas. You can also ask your vet for prescription cream to help with some topical relief back there. Given that she gets loose stools with even a little Royal Canin, I would try a different food instead. Hill Science diet is great, as well as Purina ProPlan and Iams. If any of them give her loose stools even with switching slowly, then I would stick with the Whiskas only.

It is very possible the food is causing Mac some GI distress. Other possible causes could include illnesses, infections, parasites etc. A good first step is to bring in a sample of Mac's stool to your vet for an exam and to check for parasites/common GI issues. If he checks out OK, looking to switch him to a different diet or trying out a feeding trial with your vet may help if there is an ingredient he is allergic to. It is best to transition to new food over a period of 7-9 days, gradually adding in more of the new and less of the old, to avoid further GI irritation.
